American Idol Contestant Heroically Rescues Sister’s Baby From Foster Care

When Marcio Donaldson walked out on the stage to audition for American Idol this past March, it wasn’t only his impressive vocal skills that caught the attention of the judges. It was the fact that he brought his son, Rashaad, along with him. But it’s the story behind how he became a father at the age of 28 that is even more impressive.

Donaldson originally competed on season 15 of American Idol in 2016, though he was let go in the first round. But when he came back this current season to try again, the judges were surprised by just how much had changed in his life. Not only had Donaldson become a father, but it was the circumstances that led up to it that were so amazing. Donaldson revealed that he was not the biological father of the little boy, but technically his uncle. The singer had adopted the boy after his sister was stripped of custody due to her issues with substance abuse. He explained that authorities informed him the child would be put into foster care if he didn’t agree to take him in.

However, it doesn’t sound like it was a difficult decision for Donaldson, as he revealed he didn’t Rashaad to have the same rough upbringing he had. “I only had 10 minutes to decide,” Donaldson explained, The Epoch Times reports. “So, I said, ‘No thank you, I’ll take him.’ I took that responsibility on because I didn’t want him growing up the same way I grew up. I want to do this for him.” He added, “Growing up in the inner city, it was hard. It was tough, and a lot of people succumb to the circumstances.”

Even though becoming a single father unexpectedly would present a huge lifestyle change, Donaldson says he has no regrets. “I had no idea what I was doing, but actually he’s a real gift,” the musician explained. “And it was the right decision, I know. He’s changed my life.” He added that he decided to try out for the show for a second time because “I want to give him a better life.”

Although Donaldson gave a gorgeous rendition of Labrinth’s single “Jealous” for his audition, which left him in tears by the end, he was eventually cast off the show for a second time. But with such a good heart and an incredible story, we doubt this is the last we’ll hear of Marcio Donaldson and his adorable son.
