Angelina Jolie shared her experience of having to “rediscover” herself while raising her teenagers. The actress’ journey as a mother is changing, and it’s both exciting and nerve-wracking. With some practice with her eldest children, Jolie is sure to become a super mom to her teenagers.

The Oscar-winning actress has six children, and her ex-husband, Brad Pitt, shares the burden of parenting responsibilities with her. Her children (Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Siloh, Vivienne, and Knox) are all in or about to enter their teenage years; from oldest to youngest, they’re aged 18, 15, 14, ,13, and 11 for the twins. With such a full house, Jolie probably took some time to get used to the rhythms of raising six kids. Now, it’s all about to change, especially since some are about to enter their post-secondary studies.

The director told Entertainment Tonight this past Tuesday that she is wrestling with the idea that her role as a mom is changing. She explains that when they were little, she felt more like a “mommy” because of how dependent they were on her. Now, she’s beginning to remember her teenage years as she watches her kids go through that time: “you see them going to punk clubs and you wonder why you can’t go.” Despite the change being strange and sudden, Jolie told the press that she is enjoying the shift. She says she is in a fun moment of self-rediscovery.

The reality of her kids becoming adults is settling in. Last month, she brought her eldest son to South Korea because he’s about to start his first year at Yonsei University. Maddox is set to study biochemistry, and his mom is so excited for this new chapter of his life. She is incredibly proud of him, but she did admit that it’s a hard time; any mother will find it hard to send their kids off to college.

Jolie lives by the philosophy that she needs to be a good role model for her children. She focuses on showing kindness, both to herself and others. It’s also always important to her that her children know their place and stay humble. Even though their mom is a superstar, Jolie’s kids see that she remembers that she is just a tiny piece in a very big world.
