While this Australian couple knew their baby would be big, the parents definitely weren’t expecting their newborn to weigh a whopping 13 pounds.
Emma and Daniel Millar recently welcomed a daughter, Remi Frances Millar, earlier this week. Even though their little one is only a few days old, she’s already making headlines. That’s because little Remi was born at 12.9lb, which is way about the average weight of 7.2lbs for newborns, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.
The new mother went into labour at 38 weeks and two days. Emma had to get an emergency caesarean section when Remi’s large size became a problem. While the couple already knew their infant would be on the larger size thanks to ultrasounds, they had no idea she’s be this big.
"She's like a mini sumo wrestler. I did expect to have a larger baby as I had gestational diabetes but not this big,” Emma explained. "At 35 weeks an ultrasound revealed she was about 4kg but we didn't think she'd grow that much more."
The couple’s firstborn daughter, Willow, now aged 2, also had an above-average birth weight. Willow was born weighing 12.1lb, not even a pound shy of her younger sister. "Willow was a big girl too. But she's stick thin now so it evens itself out,” Emma explained. The couple are also parents to 4-year old son Ace, who weight 8.3lb at birth.
As for how their newest addition is doing, Emma said her older children love their little sister.. “Our other children just adore Remi, who is really healthy and content and just thriving,” the mom-of-three said.
Daniel added, "When I've walked around with her there's always a crowd of people - midwives, other new parents and visitors - around her, asking about her size because she's so much bigger than all the other newborns. He continued, "She's definitely making an impression."
However, since Emma is still recovering from her c-section, she’s unfortunately not able to pick her new baby up by herself. "She's about the limit I've been told," she revealed. "It ended up being an emergency Caesar again with Remi though because my waters broke early.” However, the mom feels it worked out in the end, as she added, "I don't think I could have handled a natural birth with her."
The proud parents have since been discharged from the hospital and taken baby Remi home. But their next family outing might be to the mall. Emma admitted the new baby didn’t fit most of the newborn clothes they had picked for her. "We had many little outfits in size 0000 but she's actually a 00," she said. "We only had one outfit that actually fitted her on Monday."
