It’s hard to believe 2019 is almost here! With an eye ahead to the coming year, I’ve looked into the expected trends for all things baby-related. Times change and our tastes change with them. While some of these trends are carrying over from 2018, others are a breath of fresh air for parents who can’t agree on a name for their little bundle of joy!
Three-Letter Baby Names Are Popular This Year
Many parents are drawn to short names for their new babies. The punchy attitude gives the name a timeless feel and a sense of strength. Some of my favorites are stop-you-in-your-tracks stunning names! Perhaps you’d even like to use one of these brief-but-bold picks for your baby’s first or middle name?
Choose A Baby Name That Starts With "F"
I’m a big fan of these names - my son’s middle name starts with an “F”, actually! For some reason, boy names with an “F” sound simultaneously dignified and down-to-earth. They also tend to have an old-school vintage vibe; you’d get a two-for-one on 2019 name trends!
Name Your Baby After A Beautiful Pastel Color
2018’s popular baby names included colorful wonders like Cobalt, Scarlet, and Ruby. In 2019, the color trend continues, but with a softer touch. Leading the pack with soft pastels and muted hues, babies named Lilac or Fawn will be the most popular of 2019!

Go For A Retro Vibe With Vintage Names
The vintage trend is not new, but it lives on in 2019. Maybe parents are trying to harken back to a simpler time by bringing back old-school names! I especially love how this trend can intersect with so many others. It’s like a double-whammy of cool-kid wordplay! Both boys and girls can rock a chic retro name.
You Might Like A Name That Has A "U" Sound
Maybe it’s because “u” is a letter of mystery and scarcity. Not too many words start with the letter, and the sound it creates makes that baby's name unique - sorry, no pun intended! While these names don’t necessarily begin with “U”, they feature the letter and sound pretty prominently. The odd mouth-feel these words create make them enigmatic in the new year.
Go Organic With A Baby Name Inspired By Nature
For parents that tend to be a bit on the “crunchy” side, names inspired by nature might be a perfect fit! I’m only moderately crunchy myself, but I did name my daughter after the northern lights and the light at dawn. Something about natural names feels pure and solid - so a kid with one of those natural names will have those characteristics, too! At least, that’s the thought.
Take Your Pick Of 2019's Gender Neutral Names
Like the rest of our culture, baby names are making a big shift toward more gender neutrality. With a name that can’t be pinned down to a particular biological sex, parents might be trying to prevent discrimination against their kids. Or perhaps they simply don’t like the sound of ultra-masculine or ultra-feminine names! My daughter’s name can be shortened to a gender-neutral name AND initials that double as a gender-neutral name (A.J.). I’m glad she will get to choose how people perceive her upon reading her name, instead of having a name that pre-determines part of their perception.
No matter which name you choose for your baby in 2019, I’m sure it will fit them perfectly!
