Baby Names "Melania" and "Ivanka" Are On The Rise

As much as Donald Trump would love for his name to be topping the baby name charts, it isn’t. That distinct honor goes to the First Lady, Melania Trump. The name “Melania” has grown in popularity since the 2016 election and the latest data shows that trend is continuing. In 2016, just 131 babies in America were named Melania. In 2017, that number more than doubled when 283 babies were given the name. “Ivanka”, courtesy of Trump’s eldest daughter Ivanka Trump, rose between 2016 and 2017. There are 164 little Ivankas celebrating their first birthday this year.

Guess who’s name has taken a dive in popularity? Yes, it obviously is the name “Donald”. Though a popular name with 600 Donald’s born in 2017, it has declined a bit. However, Donald has always been a fairly common boy's name. It’s a classic and has been steady for years. Melania’s rise on the list is notable because it also made the list of the fastest growing girls’ names in the United States. Other names on that list include Oaklyn, Dream, Emberly, Octavia, Haisley, and Kehlani. A CNN poll showed that 57% of Americans approve of the name Melania and making this list is proof of that.

The name Melania means "black or darkness" and has a Spanish and Greek origin. It ranked number 930 in the U.S in 2017. The rise in popularity is in no doubt an influence from the First Lady. Before Melania started dating Donald Trump in 2005, the name barely existed in the US. It's been used every year since they began dating and appearing in the tabloids. The name Ivanka means "God is gracious" and is more common in Slavic countries.

Melania really is a beautiful and different name for any little girl. It's quite unique! Don't be surprised if you meet many little Melanias on the playground soon!
