Researchers recently analyzed teeth from babies and discovered that there is a new way to use stem cells taken from baby teeth to regrow dental tissue in permanent teeth.
It is very common for young children and babies to ruin their baby teeth. Teeth can become damaged by a simple trip or a fall. A trip or a fall can damage the tooth's blood supply and can result in root damage. The tooth will begin to die. Damaged teeth will start to turn gray. Treatment for the gray tooth involves a procedure called apexification, which helps in the development of the root. However, the procedure does not help with any lost tissue.
Scientists from the University of Pennsylvania published their findings in the Science Translational Medicine journal. The university's scientists claim that the stem cells found in baby teeth can help rebuild adult teeth and help with lost tissue.
The results of the study showed that those given the new human deciduous pulp stem cells (hDPSC) treatment had better root development than those who were given apexification. After a year following the treatment, those who received hdPSC had regained sensation in the tissue of their injured teeth.
Songtao Shi of the University of Pennsylvania, a co-author on the study, said that the treatment allowed for people to be able to feel stimulation again. They could then feel both warm and cold temperatures because they have living teeth by the time the procedure has concluded. The group who received the new treatment were analyzed three years after the treatment and the teeth were still in good health. The hDPSC was concluded to be both safe and effective. In one particular case, a child reinjured his tooth and the new treatment was successful once again.
Although this new treatment has proven to be successful, it cannot be used on adults because they don't have baby teeth. However, researchers are trying to get approval for stem cell donations. This new treatment can provide a wonderful opportunity for people to get sensation back in their mouths even though they have had previous injured teeth. Hopefully, this treatment will be able to help thousands of patients get relief from their dental issues.
