When becoming a parent, people are faced with a lot of pressure. There is a deep, inner desire to ensure that they do the best job raising kids as possible. And there is the societal pressure to be the perfect parent. It’s a lot of anyone to deal with.

And that’s why celebrities who keep it real about the struggles and joys of parenting are amazing. Seeing these role models make the same mistakes as any other person helps to validate all the other parents in the world. Because if they can make a mistake with the help from nannies, chefs, personal trainers, and everyone else they employ, then surely it’s okay if an average mom or dad has a slip up now and then.

From dropping the occasional bad word in front of the kids to criticizing their favourite annoying television characters, there’s nothing wrong with being a parent while also being human.

These 15 celebrity dads are on the “Bad Dad” list for the best reason possible. They keep it real and help the rest of the parents out there stay sane.

15 Ryan Reynolds Is The Most Funny, But Not The Coolest

He’s been called the funniest dad on Twitter and he deserves it. Deadpool star, Ryan Reynolds, and Gossip Girl alum Blake Lively are parents to two daughters, Ines and James. And since becoming a father, Reynolds has become a force to be reckoned with on Twitter.

From jokes about Lively’s delivery—”Being a Dad isn't just about eating a huge bag of gummy-bears as your wife gives birth. It means being comfortable with the word hero.”—to confronting the realities of your kids growing up—

”It’s hard letting your infant daughter go somewhere alone for the first time. I was a total mess dropping her off at Burning Man.”

—Reynolds is always making us laugh.

“I’ve definitely lost all cool,” the actor told Jimmy Fallon on the Tonight Show. “I’m the dad guy now.” Hard to believe? Reynolds went on to share a story about a time when a bus full of high school students reminded him just how “uncool” he was.

"About a month ago, I was sitting in traffic and I was just jamming to 'These Dreams' by Heart," he told Fallon. "I was killin' it in the car and there was this busload of high school kids that were parked right beside me. I didn't even realize it. I looked over and every one of their jaws were just on the ground laughing their guts out at me."

14 John Legend Stands Up For Chrissy

While there are a lot of things that singer John Legend does that make him one of the most real celebrity dads in the biz, all it took was one groundbreaking tweet to solidify his place on this list.

Legend’s wife, model and television host Chrissy Teigen, might be one of the most controversial celebrity moms right now. Why? Well, who knows most of the time! There always seems to be something that she’s doing that the world isn’t too happy with.

The specific incident that led to Legend’s heroic tweet happened soon after the birth of the couple’s daughter Luna. You see, they had the audacity to go out to dinner. Gasp! It seems that was enough to get people extremely mad at Teigen. Commenters on Facebook went nuts, saying that Teigen had not right to leave her baby so soon after birth for a dinner and that she was only doing it to be seen.

Thank goodness for Legend who stepped in with a tweet to defend his wife and say what a lot of us have been thinking.

“Funny there's no dad-shaming. When both of us go out to dinner, shame both of us so Chrissy doesn't have to take it all. We'll split it.”

Can we get a round of applause?

13 Chris Hemsworth Finds His Inner Child

If you aren’t following the one and only Thor, I mean, Chris Hemsworth on Instagram, do yourself a favour and follow him now! The Marvel actor has been married to Spanish model Elsa Pataky since 2010 and the couple has three adorable kids together—sons Tristan and Sasha, and daughter India Rose. And his Instagram is full of the behind-the-scene peeks into their happy family life.

Other than his incredible fame and rock-hard superhero abs, Hemsworth seems like any other dad in the world. He shares about his kid's accomplishments—from mastering the art of surfing to discovering where the chocolate has been hidden at home. He shares the funny moments that are just too good—like when Sasha told Tristan to take his hand “so you don’t get eaten by a crocodile.”

The trick to finding the fun in parenting? For Hemsworth, it’s all about finding your own inner child and embracing it.

“I think [parenthood] brings out the child in all of us,” Hemsworth told Parade. “That’s what’s so beautiful. It reminds you of the fascination you had with things, and how you can spend hours just being with someone. It’s amazing.”

12 Dwayne Johnson Is An Embarrassing Dad

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is many things—a former pro wrestler, actor extraordinaire, producer and, most importantly, doting father to three daughters. Johnson’s eldest is 16-year-old Simone Alexandra, followed by 2-year-old Jasmine and the newest member of The Rock clan, 10-day-old Tiana Gia.

Since the arrival of his daughter Jasmine, we’ve got a glimpse into what a hilarious dad Johnson is. To ease his daughter’s fears of the big bad Santa Claus, Johnson dressed up like Pikachu from Pokémon in order to get a smile out of Jasmine. It of course worked!

He also isn’t shy about sharing the not-so-nice aspects of raising kids. Like when he had little Jasmine on his shoulders. He was giving her a pep talk about working hard when she grows up. “She responded by poo'ing on me in this moment as she plays her favorite game, ‘Drum time on daddy's big head’, he wrote on Instagram. “It was a good talk.”

He’s also not afraid to do what all dads do for their teenagers—embarrass them! He never shies away from an opportunity to make his daughter Simone blush.

He is the king of #EmbarrassMyDaughter and isn’t afraid to post the evidence to Instagram so we can all enjoy it.

11 Lin-Manuel Miranda Raises Weird Kids

If you’ve never heard of Lin-Manuel Miranda and the critically-acclaimed Broadway hit, Hamilton, where have you been hiding? Lin-Manuel Miranda is the star and creator of Hamilton, and he is also dad to 3-year-old Sebastian and 3-month-old Francisco.

Miranda knows how to celebrate the little wins that every parent experiences, like a clean plate—

“Good morning! This morning I got my son to eat a whole egg, so I am feeling very influential indeed.”

Or the pure joy one can feel when you manage to get into a shower for once—“This morning my son smelled my head and said, ‘Daddy wash hair! Great work!’ So yes, a bit of a day thank you.”

The best thing about Miranda is that he knows, from experience, that being a weird or different kid might mean you’re destined to do great things!

“Teach your kid to make their own way. To follow their interests, make their own path,” he told GQ. “As a kid, I had an obsession with Hollywood stunts. People falling off buildings. Catching on fire... And you are thinking right now, Where can this lead? Well, every night, when I play Hamilton and Aaron Burr shoots me, I whip around and collapse, and there is a part of my brain that is 9 years old, thinking, Does that look real?!”

10 Chris Pratt Makes Everything Positive

Actor and all-around funny guy Chris Pratt became a dad back in 2012 when he and Anna Faris welcomed their son Jack to the world. Since then, Pratt has shared all his funny parenting thoughts with the world through his Twitter and Instagram accounts.

When the director of Guardians of the Galaxy and its follow-up Vol. 2 called Pratt out on Twitter for smelling like “baby vomit and vinegar” Pratt clapped back with a hilariously honest tweet. “The vomit? Blame my son. The vinegar? Well. I'm afraid that's my feet. #blessed.”

And when Anna Faris shared a picture of their son Jack who had just had a potty training mishap, Pratt found the silver lining. “Those are swim shorts. Put him in the pool and that's perfectly acceptable behaviour. I'm proud of both of you.”

Not only is Pratt open and honest about the not-so-great moments of being a parent, he’s also ready to share about the moments that aren’t as great. Back in 2016, Pratt tweeted about just how much he missed Jack while he was away at work. “On set listening to the new @macklemore album. ‘Growing Up,’ made me legit cry. ‘I'll be patient one more month.’ Makes me miss my son.” If that doesn’t make you tear up a little bit, we’re not sure what will.

9 Dax Shepard Let Curse Words Slip

Father of two and actor, Dax Shepard, not only makes being a parent seem fun, he’s also able to laugh at himself in the process.

When speaking to Ellen Degeneres about a parenting-related injury he suffered, Shepard had the crowd laughing before he even got into the actual story. “The worst thing about owning kids is that they wake up super early.” Without missing a beat Ellen asks Dax to clarify what he means by “owning kids”.

And as you would expect for one of the realest, funniest dads out there, Shepard responds as only he would. “Well, we own a couple of these kids. We’ve got a 2013 model and a 2015, low miles if anyone’s in the market.”

He went on to explain that he goes to great lengths to keep his kids in bed as long as possible. Shepard puts tin foil on their windows and even blocks the bottom of the doorway with a towel, all in an effort to keep light out of the room.

“I go to put the towel under the door. And they have a bookshelf… I bend down, and WHAM! Straight into the bridge of my nose, hardest I’ve ever been hit in the nose. I almost blacked out. And then I let out a string of [swear words].”

It happens to us all but the best-worst part of the story? A few days later as Shepard’s daughter is trying to get herself out of a particularly tricky sweater, Shepard’s wife Kristen Bell hears their daughter scream the exact same swear word in her frustration. Whoops!

8 David Beckham Is His Son's Chaperone

While he may be one of the more strict dads in Hollywood, David Beckham still manages to make the list of the dads who are keeping it real. The father of four and husband to Victoria Beckham knows how to roll with the parental punches.

Case-in-point: he gate-crashed his eldest son, Brooklyn’s, first date.

“He was about 14 and a half,” Beckham said The Late Late Show with James Corden. “It was Valentine's Day so he said, ‘I'd love to take this girl to dinner.’”

Beckham didn’t have a problem with the date, but when he brought it up to his wife, she had other ideas. “She said, ‘Okay, make sure you take him and then make sure you sit in the restaurant.’ So I was like, ‘Really, you're going to make me do that?’ and she said ‘Yeah, that's the only way I'm going to let him go.’”

“So we took him to a small sushi restaurant and he sat at the sushi bar and I sat about five tables back. By the way, my daughter is four years old. When she gets to that age, I will be closer than that!”

Consider that an official warning to any boys planning on dating Harper!

7 Neil Patrick Harris Slams Thomas The Tank Engine

The dynamic duo of Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka are dads that we want to hang out with. Every year they give the world probably the best family Halloween costumes and never cease to make us laugh with their tweets, interviews and Instagram posts.

Harris didn’t waste time in getting in on the parenting fun. The couple welcomed twins Harper and Gideon on October 12, 2010, via surrogate. Without missing a beat, Harris posted a picture of his son Gideon on Twitter—well, sort of.

“Baby Pic! Here’s our son: Well sort of,” he tweeted. “Not his face, but his diaper. His poo has changed both colour AND texture.” He included a picture with the tweet… of Harris in costume as Barney Stinson from the show How I Met Your Mother holding a sign. “Woo… did you really just click on a link to a picture of a diaper filled with poo? REALLY…?”

And what parent couldn’t relate when Harris deconstructed Thomas the Tank Engine.

“Thomas is very fast but not the fastest because Thomas is an E2 class engine, which was made for short-haul freight journeys and shunting,” he told a group of kids in an internet skit video.

Keep this one in your back pocket for the next time you’ve heard enough about how Thomas is the best train around!

6 Jim Gaffigan's Parenting Jokes Are So Relateable

If there is one Hollywood dad that knows funny, it’s Jim Gaffigan. He’s literally made a career as a comedian on what it really means to be a parent, and he should know. Gaffigan is the father of five kids—sons Jack, Patrick and Michael and daughters Marre and Katie Louise.

Gaffigan knows that from the get-go being a parent is no cup of tea. Namely, because your newest roommate is a bit of a tyrant.

“Babies are the worst roommates. They're unemployed. They don't pay rent. They keep insane hours. Their hygiene is horrible. If you had a roommate that did any of the things babies do, you'd ask them to move out."

And as the kids grow up, it doesn’t get much easier. Babies graduate from tyrants to kamikazes pretty quickly. "Toddler judgment is horrible. They don't have any. Put a 12-month-old on a bed, and they will immediately try and crawl off head-first like a lemming on a mindless migration mission. But the toddler mission is never mindless. They have two goals: Find poison and find something to destroy."

But for Gaffigan, it’s all about doing it with a sense of humour and a smile if you can manage it. "Failing and laughing at your own shortcomings are the hallmarks of a sane parent."

5 Chance The Rapper Crowdsources Fun

Rapper and father of 2-year-old Kensli, Chance The Rapper may be the sweetest celebrity dad there is. All you have to do is check out his Instagram account to see adorable, candid pictures of the daddy-daughter duo.

Chance is open about how hard it can be keeping a toddler entertained and he had no problem reaching out to crowdsource some fun things to do with Kensli.

“Parents of 2 yr olds: what’s something fun you guys did together recently,” he tweeted. And the internet did not disappoint, offering up everything from a trip to the frozen yogurt shop to hunting for rocks and visiting a farm.

During an appearance on NPR Chance opened up about how becoming a dad has changed every aspect of his life, including his music.

"I try to be deliberate, more intent about things that I say," he said. "The content itself has changed, rapping as if I know she's going to listen. But also, I just can't be at the studio all night because I have a daughter. I'm more conscious of my time and I've come to understand that—and I think I understood before she was even born—art is awesome, art is beautiful because it's a reflection of life and it describes life and shows life in its beauty. But it's just a reflection. The real thing is my daughter. I understand what is most important now."

I’m not crying, you’re crying!

4 Adam Levine’s Close Call In The Delivery Room

Maroon Five frontman Adam Levine became a father when he and Victoria Secret model Behati Prinsloo welcomed daughter Dusty Rose in 2016. The couple now has a second daughter, Gio Grace, who was born in February 2018.

But what makes Levine such a real, honest, endearing dad is his close call in the delivery room. When Prinsloo went into labour, Levine took some advice from Carson Daly to make sure that he ate something.

“They say that a large percentage of new dads when their wife is in labour, they pass out because they forget to take care of themselves and nourish themselves with food, and they faint a lot of the time,” Levine told Jimmy Kimmel. “I don’t know if that’s true or not; it sounded pretty official, from the way [Daly] told me.”

But Levine may have taken it a bit far, eating cheeseburgers, pizzas and everything else he could get his hands on. He was full of energy but also full of something else—a desperate need to use the bathroom.

“I’m like… I’m just going to wait this out. Because I could go to the bathroom and come back, and the baby’s out and I missed the whole thing. It was brutal. So, I waited, doubled over in pain, and finally, the baby came,” Levine said. “It was beautiful and it was amazing. The second the coast is clear—my wife’s good, she’s healthy, everyone’s happy—I took one of the nurses aside and I was like, ‘Look, you gotta find me a bathroom.’ She’s like, ‘Well, there’s one right here.’ It was at the foot of [my wife’s] bed. I was like, ‘Nope, not this one.’”

3 Ashton Kutcher Explains The Tough Decisions

Actor Ashton Kutcher takes his role of father as the most important one of his life. He and actress Mila Kunis have two kids—daughter Wyatt and son Dimitri—and they both make us laugh regularly when speaking about how they raise their kids.

First and foremost, Kutcher likes to keep things real—or as real as possible—with his kids. In an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, Kutcher opened up about how he and Kunis decided to approach some of the more whimsical aspects of childhood.

“We had a legitimate conversation as to whether or not we’re going to go down that path. We think we’re going Santa Claus, but we don’t know about the bunny,” he said.

“It’s tough! It’s like, why is the bunny laying eggs? ‘Mommy, does a bunny lay eggs?’ ‘No, but the Easter Bunny does,’ and then it becomes a whole thing and then why were there little Peep chicken things?”

It makes sense, I mean most adults are still scratching their heads trying to comprehend why the Easter bunny lays eggs. Kutcher’s got the right idea. Keep it simple, but find ways to keep the magic alive with your kids.

2 Adam Scott Doesn't Have Time For Fun

Leave it to a comedian to make us laugh and cry along with his parenting woes. Actor and comedian Adam Scott has two kids—a 9-year-old daughter named Frankie and an 11-year-old son named Graham.

Back in 2012, Scott reminisced in TIME about what it was like to start his family with wife Naomi Scott. If there’s something most new parents can relate to, it’s the daunting task of caring for a newborn. Most parents would rather take an extra hour of sleep than a visit with friends.

“When my wife and I started having kids five years ago, we literally dropped out of society for 6 months and went off the grid.”

Now that his kids are all getting into their tweens, Scott says they love to watch comedy sitcoms like The Good Place and Superstore. Sounds like they’d be the perfect audience for Scott’s own show Parks and Rec, right? Wrong!

“I’m kind of always like, ‘Hey guys, you know what would fit perfectly into that comedy trifecta, is a little show called Parks and Rec,’” he said on Late Night with Seth Meyers. They just don’t seem to agree and tend to respond with, “Nah, not really, it doesn’t feel right, right now. Let’s watch this episode of The Good Place again instead.” Ouch!

1 Taye Diggs's Son Doesn't Know What He Does

When you’re an accomplished actor, who has not only starred in films and television shows but made your mark by conquering Broadway, is it too much to ask that your kids get just how awesome you are?

Turns out yes, it 100% is too much to ask for, at least if you’re actor and singer Taye Diggs. His son Walker Nathaniel Diggs doesn’t really “get” what his dad is all about.

"Someone asked my son what his father does for a living. He said ‘he plays basketball and changes his shorts.’”

But Diggs doesn’t let his son’s under-appreciation for his day job get him down. He understands that there is a lot more to being a parent than your child’s admiration—and since Walker said that when he was only 3, surely the admiration will come along at some point!

“For me, the greatest thing about being a dad is a tie between when I haven’t seen my son in awhile and he runs to me and says, ‘Daddy’ and when he’s asleep and I’m carrying him to the bed,” he told People. Diggs joking adds the sentiment that all parents feel every now and again, “Ah, he’s so cute when he’s asleep.”
