U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos has called out the UN to stop China from killing baby girls. During the Thursday virtual UN General Assembly meeting, Devos said that the Chinese Communist Party has been murdering millions of baby girls since 1995 in an attempt to control the population. She said that the UN should stop ignoring such atrocities. However, the Chinese government and the UN have not commented on Devos's request. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that women should be accorded full human rights and freedom because it's important for the prosperity and peace of a healthy planet.

During the 1995 UN conference in Beijing, almost 190 countries concurred to having women participate equally in political, economic, civil as well as socio-cultural life nationally, and even internationally. 25 years later, China has not met the goal of having women equally participating in politics, civil, and economic activities. French President Emmanuel Macron stated that our democracies still undermine women’s freedom of taking charge of their bodies particularly on the issue of the right to abortion. President Donald Trump's administration is against the UN's promotion of women's rights on sexual and reproductive health because it sees it as an abortion-coded language.

According to Reuters, President Trump told the UN last week that although his administration is advocating for equal opportunities for women, it's also advocating for the protection of the unborn children. Guterres pointed out that although there was progress in achieving women's rights in the last 25 years, the Beijing declaration that was made in 1995 has not been met. Chinese President Xi Jinping has pledged $10 million to the UN's department for gender equality to help in women empowerment. He said that as the world is struggling to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a need to get rid of discrimination, prejudice, and violence against women. He added that gender equality should be a social norm and an important moral that should be observed by everybody.

In 2015, the Chinese government ended its 35-year-old policy of one child. The one-child policy led to millions of abortions as families tried to get rid of baby girls to preserve the chance for a baby boy. The policy also led to sex imbalances, and China is reported in 2016 to be having 30 million more men than women hence 30 million men who can't find wives. When the policy was enforced around 1980, families that gave birth to baby girls had to abandon their babies or give them away as they tried for a baby boy.  After the advancement of the technology in the 1990s, there was an increase in families who would scan their pregnancy to check the gender of the baby before giving birth, and if they found it to be a girl, then they would abort it.
