Recently, Bethany Hamilton's 4-year-old son found out how his famous professional surfer mother lost her arm. But the way that he found out was a bit unexpected.
Bethany might be the most famous shark attack survivor in the world thanks to the hit movie made Soul Surfer, starring AnnaSophia Robb. But the celebrity's oldest son, Tobias, didn't discover the story about the loss of his mom's arm directly from her.
Rather, according to Us Weekly, Hamilton, 29, told the magazine that she never explained what happened to Tobias. Instead, she believes that her nieces and nephews told him about the shark who bit her arm during a surf years ago. "Kids will be kids," Hamilton said. "Words get out."
The pro surfer and mom-of-two is busy promoting her new documentary Bethany Hamilton: Unstoppable, which her children have seen. However, the athlete told Us Weekly that she's not in a rush for either Tobias or 16-month-old Wesley to see Soul Surfer for a couple of reasons.
She and Tobias both surf, and with any luck, little Wesley will be surfing before long as well. So, Bethany doesn't want her boys to have any fears in the water even though they'll have full knowledge of what happened to her arm.
But maybe the main reason is the actual shark attack scene in the movie with AnnaSophia Robb. "The shark attack scene is a bit gory and kind of crazy and hectic," she explained.
Hamilton hopes that her sons love the ocean as much as she and their father and her husband, Adam Dirk,s do. Neither Hamilton or Dirks are pushing their boys to be pro surfers but Hamilton says that if it happens, "I'll be there cheering them on!"
No word yet on if Wesley has spoken about learning about his mother's missing arm but chances are that he will hear about it soon from his big brother or from the new documentary, Bethany Hamilton: Unstoppable.
We can hardly wait to see more from this little family with two boys being raised with such an inspirational mother! What do you think about this update about this incredible woman? We would love to know your thoughts down in the comments!
