Beyoncé is now a proud mother-of-three but her road to motherhood was anything but easy. The notoriously private celebrity recently opened up about experience multiple miscarriages.

The singer recently posed for the Elle January 2020 cover. During the interview portion, Beyoncé got candid about undergoing several miscarriages prior to the arrival of her first child, daughter Blue Ivy, in 2012. The star admits that her losses transformed her outlook on life. “I began to search for deeper meaning when life began to teach me lessons I didn’t know I needed,” she explained, People reports.

“Success looks different to me now. I learned that all pain and loss is in fact a gift,” she continued. “Having miscarriages taught me that I had to mother myself before I could be a mother to someone else.”

“Then I had Blue, and the quest for my purpose became so much deeper,” Bey added. “I died and was reborn in my relationship, and the quest for self became even stronger.” Beyoncé and her husband Jay-Z, who wed in 2008, later welcomed twins, Rumi and Sir, in 2017. The famous mom admits that it’s hard for her to think about who she was before undergoing these powerful experiences. “It’s difficult for me to go backwards,” she told the publication. “Being ‘No. 1’ was no longer my priority. My true win is creating art and a legacy that will live far beyond me. That’s fulfilling.”

Later in the interview, Beyoncé shifted the conversation to balancing work with motherhood, which she says is the “most stressful” thing about raising her three kids. “Making sure I am present for my kids — dropping Blue off at school, taking Rumi and Sir to their activities, making time for date nights with my husband and being home in time to have dinner with my family — all while running a company can be challenging,” she explained. She added, “Juggling all of those roles can be stressful, but I think that’s life for any working mom.”

Finally, the songstress also commented on how becoming a mom changed her relationship with her body- for the better. “But children and maturity have taught me to value myself beyond my physical appearance and really understand that I am more than enough no matter what stage I’m at in life,” she reflected. “Giving zero f—s is the most liberating place to be.”
