One year ago a baby was born from a uterus from a deceased donor and thankfully now the baby and mother are doing great.

Thousands of women around the world struggle with infertility issues. Many of the issues are a result of something wrong with the woman's uterus. When women have issues with their uterus then they are unable to carry their own babies even with the help of procedures such as invitro-fertilization. Most procedures are only successful when the woman has a healthy and capable uterus. The use of donor uteri would allow women who would like the chance to grow their own babies have the opportunity to do so. There have been ten attempts in Turkey, Czech Republic, and the U.S.A using a deceased donor. Each of the previous attempts had failed, but thankfully, we have some good news.

Doctors in Brazil have reported that a woman was able to give birth last December to a healthy baby girl by using a donor uterus. Now, almost a year later, both mother and baby are doing great and are both healthy. Dr. Dani Ejzenberg, the transplant team’s lead doctor at the University of Sao Paulo School of Medicine, said that he was so thrilled that the procedure was so successful.

The donor was a 45-year-old woman who was a mother to three children. She sadly died of a stroke but was kind enough to donate her organs to those in need. The recipient (who wants to remain nameless) was able to receive the uterus. She became pregnant 7 months later by using invitro-fertilization; which was successful with the donor uterus.  The recipient had a healthy pregnancy and she gave birth to her daughter via c-section. Right after she gave birth the doctors removed her womb, so that she would no longer have to take the anti-rejection medicine which she had to take since she had the transplant.

It is just incredible that the woman was able to grow a healthy baby with somebody else's uterus. Since then there has been another successful donor birth! It is amazing to watch science develop in a way that allows women to carry their own children. Congratulations to the mother and the beautiful baby girl!
