Many fans speculated why it took so long for country superstar Carrie Underwood and her husband to welcome baby no. 2. But the singer is finally opening up about her difficult road to becoming a mom-of-two.

While speaking to People, the celebrity revealed just how much pain in after she experienced three miscarriages in under two years before welcoming her youngest son. Her fertility struggles happened around the same time she took a nasty fall in 2017, which left her with a broken wrist and facial lacerations that required 50 stitches. Underwood even underwent facial reconstruction surgery following the injuries.

Underwood says she couldn’t help but feel somehow responsible for losing her pregnancies and she started struggling with guilt. “Of course, you wonder if it’s you, what am I doing wrong, or what have I done wrong,” she explained. “I remember having conversations with Mike trying to make sense of it all.” Underwood and her husband, NHL star Mike Fisher, were married in 2010 after two years of dating. They originally met when Fisher came backstage after one of her concerts and the sparks just started flying.

Despite being an outspokenly devout Christian during her entire musical career, she admitted she had difficulty talking to God about her struggles. “I’ve always wanted to be a good daughter to my parents but also to God and not complain, because we are beyond blessed,” she said, adding that she tried to just remind herself lucky she already was.

However, in the end, she says the traumatic miscarriages made her faith stronger. Underwood explained, “But the miscarriages made me get real with God and say, ‘Okay, I’m kind of giving up a little bit. If this isn’t meant to happen, then I need to accept that and know that someday I’ll understand why.’”

Underwood gave birth to her second son, Jacob Bryan, earlier this year. He joins big brother Michael Isaiah, who was born in 2015. The country starlet made headlines a few months ago when she admitted her newborn was coming on tour with her during her Cry Pretty 360 arena tour, which is still ongoing. Since this wasn’t Underwood’s first time taking a baby on tour, she implied that it wasn’t as hard as one might thing. “This isn’t my first rodeo,” she added.
