Casey Goode is opening up on what life was like while her newborn son was in the hospital after he contracted COVID-19. Goode revealed earlier this month that her baby boy had the virus that’s been hitting communities hard all around the world. She recalls the moments of being in isolation with her son as lonely but always remained positive.

Goode, best known as Quigley, announced on her Instagram page on October 4 that her newborn son Maximilian had tested positive for COVID-19 on the morning of October 3. The American Idol alum said she and her husband Alex Goode took their son to the emergency room after he spiked a fever in the middle of the night. The baby boy had been home for only a few days after spending time in the neonatal intensive care unit because he was born when Casey was 37 weeks pregnant. According to PEOPLE, his fever was 101 degrees and when they arrived at the hospital and he tested positive for COVID-19. Goode says she was in complete shock but was able to stay calm because her maternal instincts kicked in. She recalls feeling like she didn’t have a choice to be anything but strong, and felt a calm and confident “energy wave” over her body.

The new mom admits she felt worried, but would not allow herself to “go to a dark place.” Instead of panicking, she knew to stay calm and secure. Sadly, Alex was not allowed to be in the hospital with his newborn son due to COVID-19 restrictions. Alex learned his son was positive for the virus over a phone call and recalls being shocked by the news. At that moment, he just wanted to be “a rock” for his wife and baby boy. Casey and Maximilian, or Max, were taken to the pediatric intensive care unit to start quarantine. They were put into an isolation room without being prepared, which felt terrifying, Casey remembers. Casey was not tested for the virus but was treated as if she was also positive. She says the hardest part of their hospital stay was seeing her son hooked up to so many cords for oxygen and how uncomfortable he was. Yet, the new mom continued to stay positive and decided to look at it as extra time for the two to bond.

Max and Casey were discharged from the hospital on October 7. Casey tested negative for the virus after coming out of quarantine. Max has also nearly fully recovered from the symptoms of the virus.
