We love them, and we hate them, they are one of a lot of people’s guilty pleasures and we tune in every week to watch them. This sounds like the start of a tough riddle, but I am really just talking about any show related to teen moms. Shows surrounding being a teen mom have been criticized for glorifying being a young mom, while others say it shows the harsh reality of being irresponsible. Either way, we all still tune in every week to watch them.

Catelynn Lowell first appeared in the reality television show 16 and Pregnant in 2009. She then went on to be cast in the spin-off, Teen Mom. She was on that show until it ended in 2012. In March 2015, Lowell returned to MTV for the fifth season of the show newly titled, Teen Mom OG.

Lowell’s time on the shows was pretty predictable. It followed her and her then boyfriend, Tyler, through the process of getting pregnant at 16 and then giving that baby up for adoption. The pair ended up getting married and having another child, Novalee, which they decided to keep.

There seems to be controversy following many of the girls that appeared on any of the teen moms shows, and Lowell is no different. 15 Checked Herself Into Hospital

It takes a big person to admit that they need help, and an even bigger person to reach out and get the help they need. In November 2017, Lowell checked herself into a hospital after she experienced some suicidal thoughts. Tyler posted an emotional tweet stating that he was heartbroken that he was not going to be able to tell Lowell how thankful he is for her. He also stated that he was missing her a lot. As hard as that is, I am sure that Tyler is glad that she was getting the help she needed.

Lowell had tweeted out previously that she had “thought of every way to kill myself … so, I am going to treatment.” She went on to reference Linkin Park’s Chester in her tweet, who had previously taken his own life due to mental health issues. 14 Called Off Wedding

Lowell and her now-husband Tyler have been in a relationship since middle school. They are the true definition of school sweet hearts. Not many people can say that they are still with the person that they dated in high school, most of those relationships don’t last. The couple finally tied the knot in 2015, before they were expecting their second child. What a lot of people do not know is that was not their first attempt at walking down the aisle.

The couple were supposed to be married a few years earlier, but in 2013, Tyler called off the wedding. Tyler stated, “I thought I was ready, but as the time gets close, I just don’t think so.” As everyone would suspect, Lowell was devastated. Tyler made this statement when the pair were on another MTV show Couples Therapy. However, it was also on that show where the pair worked on their relationship together and finally were able to commit to each other.

Lowell has been in rehab a few times, and if a person really needs it that is wonderful. Rehab institutions are there to help people get back to a normal, happy and healthy life. 11 Crazy Home Life

Statistically speaking, when you look at teen moms and dads they have not always had the best home life growing up. This is no different for Lowell and Tyler. Their life growing up was talked about briefly on their MTV shows, and showed great insight into who they are. Lowell’s mother, April, was sadly an addict and was constantly using drugs and alcohol. Tyler’s father Butch was not much different. Butch was also an addict, and Tyler was surrounded by drugs for most of his life.

10 PPD Struggle

Many women struggle with postpartum depression, and the stigma around it is slowly disappearing. Lowell is one of those women, as she has started to open up about her battle with PPD. Lowell stated that she started suffering after the birth of her second child, Novalee, and was having pretty severe panic attacks. She states that her experience with PPD has made her a little wary of having more children.

She knows that if you have it once, you have a higher chance of having it again, so Lowell is fearful of going through her struggles all over again. She did not experience PPD with the birth of her first daughter, Carly, so it came as a complete shock. She stated that a lot of people would joke around with her, almost make fun of her, when she would have these panic attacks because they were paralyzing. She would just freeze in a ball and cry and no one understood what was happening.

9 Love At First Sight?

As I said earlier, the pair met in middle school. It was actually in 7^th grade music class to be exact and it seemed to be love at first sight. Tyler stated that he knew instantly that she was meant for him, the way she dressed matched his personality perfectly. He asked Lowell why she fell in love with him, and she stated that he had the ability to always make her laugh. That is a good quality to have, because when the going gets tough we want to be able to go to our partner to make life just a little easier.

If you are thinking that Tyler is this adorable little person now, I hate to burst your bubble, but I have too. The pair have written a book together (that section is coming up) and in the book he states that the reason he fell for Lowell was because “she’s got a bigger chest than any other girl in the 7^th grade.” The romance is kind of killed now.

8 Strictly Pro-Life

Everyone has a stance on the abortion discussion. You are either pro-life or pro-choice. A lot of people choose not to discuss their stance in public because they find it a very private matter. Lowell has had no problems stating that she is 100% pro-life. This does make sense, seeing that she chose to give her first baby up for adoption instead of terminating the pregnancy.

Lowell has sent out many tweets about abortion being wrong and ‘murder’. She shared a picture on Instagram that stated that ‘if someone is declared dead when their heart stops beating, why are they not declared alive when it starts beating.’ It is not surprising to know that Lowell has received backlash for her views, stating that it is a violation of a woman’s rights to her own body. At the end of the day, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

7 Caught Lighting Up

What a person does on their own time is normally not anyone’s business, but when it comes to being a celebrity it seems harder to hide vices. MTV has always gone to great lengths to edit out scenes of any of the teen moms smoking. There are only limited shots of any of the moms with a lit cigarette in their hands. Catelynn has admitted to being a smoker, both of cigarettes and other, but swears that she quit the moment she knew she was pregnant with Novalee.

She states that she still does smoke Mary Jane at least “twice a day” and that it really helps with her struggle with mental health issues. She has also been filmed and photographed multiple times with a lit cigarette in her hand. This may not seem like a big deal, but others state that smoking Mary Jane when you are caring for a child is irresponsible. There have been no actual claims or evidence that Lowell does partake in the activity when her daughter is around.

6 Troubled Mothers

Both Lowell and her mother, April, have had their fair share of a troubled past. Lowell has opened up about the harm that had come to her mother at the hands of some ex-boyfriends. Stating that the harm didn’t end with April, and Lowell found herself a victim as well. Lowell stated that at one of the worst moments in her life, it was Tyler who came and saved the day.

It may be due to this past that lead Lowell to turn to drugs as a young teenager. Before the age of 16, Lowell was using drugs and things got pretty rocky. She has admitted that her and her friends would use pretty much anything they could get their hands on and that it put them in some dangerous situations sometimes. Many people condone Lowell for pulling herself out of that lifestyle and creating a better life for her daughter.

5 Big Family, But For Who?

Many people think one of the biggest benefits of having children young is that you have a long time to have even more children. Sometimes, being a teen parent works in the opposite way. They are so bothered by the struggle and work it took with their first child, that they tend to stick to just a couple. Lowell was asked how many children she wants to have, and her response was unexpected. She stated that she wants at least three more children, making her total up to four in her custody, and five that she has birthed.

Tyler does not seem to be on the same page and said that he would stop after having three children. He has gone as far as to say that after the birth of their technically fourth child, he would be having a vasectomy done to make sure there were no more babies.

4 Strained Relationship

Before the birth of Lowell’s daughter, Novalee, her and Tyler were expecting another child that they had decided they would give up for adoption. This little girls name was Carly and she was adopted by a couple, Brandon and Teresa Davis. The relationship between the birth and adoptive parents is a strained relationship, which had caused Lowell to go two years without seeing her first daughter.

Lowell was recently allowed a visit with her birth daughter and was exploding over social media with excitement. Some are torn on what Lowell’s rights should be to see her daughter that she gave up for adoption. It depends on the rules of the adoption. If it was an open adoption, then Lowell would be allowed rights, but only at the adopted parents discretion. Brandon and Teresa have not stated their reasons for not wanting Lowell to visit their daughter, but it is rumoured to have something to do with her drug use.

3 She Was Head Hunted By MTV

Reality shows are a mystery to a lot of people. We often wonder how these seemingly ordinary people get the opportunity of a lifetime? The truth is, a lot of the networks of these types of programming’s have an idea and they find the family or person that would fill the role. This is exactly how Lowell ended up on MTV. She was essentially headhunted.

The network had a lot of teen moms, but they were all moms that were planning on keeping their baby. They wanted to show a different side. They wanted to show a side where the young parents gave their child up for adoption. Lowell and Tyler fit that description perfectly, so they were hired. It can be really informative to show the side of a parent giving their child up for adoption, because no matter your age, it is a hard and difficult process.

2 She Wrote A Book

This one may not be the world’s biggest secret, because it is available at every book store. Lowell and Tyler wrote a book, Conquering Chaos, and it is being sold anywhere that books are sold. It is an impressive task for two young people. The book is a very candid look at their life. The pair talk about their struggle with their first pregnancy and take readers through their experience giving her up for adoption.

They also go on to talk about their troubled childhoods and how they managed to stay together and rise above it all. It is a great testament to how two people can struggle through so much together, and still rise out of the ashes with love and commitment. What the pair have been through in their life would make any strong couple break apart. It is really a great read, because their situation is refreshing and not one you see very often.

1 An Affair

While their relationship appears strong today, they have been through their fair share of relationship struggles. There were serious allegations that while Lowell was in rehab focusing on getting healthy and happy again, Tyler was having an affair. Tyler has adamantly denied all claims and states that he has never and would never cheat on his wife, who he loves very much.

A fan of the show tweeted Tyler with an article that stated that he had been cheating, and that when Lowell gets healthy and starts seeing clearly, she will uncover it all. It went on to say that this may be the push she needs to take her own life. This is a pretty strong and serious accusation, and Tyler was not having any of it. Tyler laughed it off at first, thinking it was a joke, but then started to take it more seriously and asked the blogger from some evidence to back up his claims. Evidence was never given.
