One Scottish dad delivered his premature daughter at home in the bathroom, using earphones to tie the umbilical cord once the baby was born.

Richard Cox was not prepared for what happened one night in early January. His wife Hayley was pregnant but she was not due until the end of February. Therefore, when she started having sharp pains, the couple assumed it was Braxton hicks or false labor. But as it turned out Hayley's intense pains were actually labor, and their baby was not going to wait for her due date.

As he heard his wife call for him from the bathroom, Richard rushed to be by her side. He realized that she was in labor, but before he could even call for an ambulance, he was delivering his daughter. Richard told the local news that it all happened so quickly, he had no idea what he was doing, and he simply jumped into action.

Immediately after the baby was born Richard called for an ambulance and explained what had just happened in his bathroom. The dispatcher told Richard to find some type of string to tie the umbilical cord. However, the only thing he could see was a pair of iPhone headphones, so he made that work. Baby Emilie's umbilical cord was tied with the headphones, and everything was as it should be as they waited for the ambulance.

The Cox family is eternally grateful to the Scottish Ambulance Service. They know if it was not for the dispatcher and the quick action of the paramedics once arriving on the scene, little Emilie might not be alive. Once the ambulance arrived, the entire Cox family was transported to the nearest hospital.

Since she only weighed 3 lbs 14 oz when she was born, Emilie had to spend about three weeks in the Special Care Baby Unit at the hospital because she was so premature. However, now her parents are happy to report that she is doing just fine and weighs in at 16 lbs and 12 oz. Emilie is growing and progressing as any other baby, despite her dramatic entrance into the world!
