Carla Collazo told FOX 29's reporter Joyce Evans that she wasn't showing any traditional symptoms of pregnancy (aside from one) before giving birth despite years of trying and hoping for a child. Collazo had been led to believe that she was either unable to conceive, or would have a very difficult time conceiving due to suffering from a gynecological condition.
Collazo said that she noticed she had developed swollen ankles over time. But because she's constantly on her feet all day due to her job, she didn't think anything of it. She merely dismissed it as a normal work hazard, and not a pregnancy symptom.
"I'd been trying for years, nothing came out of it so I was like I am 37 now it is what it is," Carla Collazo told FOX 29's Joyce Evans.
So in the early morning of Sunday,Aug. 25, when Collazo's back and stomach began hurting and aching severely, pregnancy wasn't anywhere in her mind. Her sister-in-law, Alexandra Santos, was extremely supportive and ready to rush the 37-year-old to the emergency room, but Collazo entered the her bathroom before they could leave.
"I was just in shock—just in shock," she said.
Then according to Fox News 13, Collazo delivered a baby into her toilet before truly grasping what had just happened. It was then when Santos called 911.
"It happened so fast everything just came out so now she has a placenta in her hand and I have a baby in my hand," Santos said of the incredible incident. "She's freaking out. I'm telling her that we have a baby. We have to save her."
The baby girl, whom was later named Amoura Rose, weighed slightly over two pounds when she was. This classifies her as a premature baby. She was taken to Christiana Hospital shortly after birth.
"I tied it on the umbilical cord as tight as I could," Santos said, recalling how 911 directed her to tie off the baby's umbilical cord with a shoestring. "She was just so precious. She was looking at me and I was looking in her eyes. I just knew how much she cried and prayed for something like that."
Reprtedly, Baby Amoura is already doing great. She has gained weight at the hospital, and is drinking from a bottle. Collazo already back at work and visits Amoura regularly. When she can't visit her, she watches her little girl through an app on her phone!
Baby and mom are due to be reunited soon when Amoura's released from the hospital in a couple of weeks. Congratulations to the new mom!
