Pregnancy changes your body in so many ways. Fluctuating pregnancy hormones can wreak havoc on your appetite, teeth and skin in ways that you may not have anticipated. Almost 50% of all adults admit that they have “acne prone skin”, and the number only increases among pregnant women. You may discover that your normal skincare routine may need to change because it may stop working or you may be using products that are not safe to use while pregnant. Thankfully, a dermatologist - who is currently pregnant- has recently shared her insights and favorite products that helps keep her skin looking flawless.

Dr. Laura Scott is a dermatologist in Miami, Florida. Though her skin has been noted as nearly perfect, Dr. Scott explained that she suffers from adult acne and hyperpigmentation. She also commented that because she is pregnant she can’t use typical medications to help fix these issues such as “retinoids and retinols, salicylic acid, [or] hydroquinone” because they have been deemed unsafe. All of the products she mentioned to Women’s Health Magazine are readily available over the counter or online. With each product Dr. Scott also clearly stated what it does for her skin and when she uses it.

The first two products are an eye cream and face serum that both contain vitamin C. She wrote that the vitamin C brightens her “delicate eye skin” and “fights against free radical damage and helps fade dark marks”. Both of these are applied in the morning and worn all day.

Next, Dr. Scott chooses a “mineral” sunscreen and “no-frills” moisturizer to help protect her skin throughout the day and night. Since her skin is prone to hyperpigmentation, she has to be extra careful about sun exposure during the day. Pregnancy makes her and all women at a higher risk of “pigmentary problems” or sun spots. Then at night, she applies a foaming moisturizer to help cleanse her skin from the day so it won’t “over-strip [her] skin and lead to skin barrier issues”. She also made it clear that she does not need to moisturize every night, only when she believes she needs to.

Lastly, Dr. Scott stated that she uses Mandelic Acid to help fight her acne. The serum has been derived from almonds and was discovered in 1831. Surprisingly, it has been used in the past to help fight urinary tract infections. However, it has proven to be effective in face peels. Dr. Scott said it “penetrates skin slowly and does not cause irritation” while protecting her from future pimples.

Finding safe products to use while pregnant can be a challenge. Many, if not all, companies will put a warning on their labels that if you are pregnant or breastfeeding to contact your doctor before using their products. The FDA only does so many studies at a time, and it can take years before coming to a conclusion about certain products. You should always contact your OBGYN or midwife to ask for pregnancy-safe recommendations.
