Eggs Recognized As A Pregnancy Superfood According To A New Study

Eggs have just been proven to be an amazing and necessary superfood for pregnant women due to their tremendous health benefits.

The eggs in question belong to British hens from across the pond and have been found to reduce the likelihood of premature birth, low birth weight, and maternal depression.

When women are pregnant, they need more vitamins and nutrients for the healthy development of their baby. They also need to stay healthy themselves from the added stress on their body from growing another human. This incredible news about eggs comes as a reversal from the recommendation that came out just two years ago. 18 studies all found that the consumption of eggs is extremely beneficial because they contain so many vital nutrients that are needed in pregnancy such as vitamin B12, vitamin D, folate, choline, iron, and iodine.

The Daily Mail in the UK reported on these studies that are all based on British hens but could extend to eggs across the globe. Just one egg contains more than 100% of the needed B12 for pregnant women. Vitamin B12 is important for nerve cells and red blood cells. Folate is another very important nutrients that will help to prevent spina bifida and other neural tube disorders in unborn babies. This is why pregnant women take a daily prenatal pill, but the eggs are an extra added benefit to ease one's mind. Even more so, eggs are one of the few natural sources of vitamin D which is also crucial during pregnancy. This is certainly egg-citing news!

Dietician Cordelia Woodward co-authored parts of the analysis of these studies and praised the amount of iron that they have as well, "The iron in eggs plays an important role during pregnancy as this is a time when women’s blood iron levels can fall, leading to tiredness and fatigue." Iron pills can be prescribed if low levels are detected but they can cause constipation which can happen in pregnancy anyway, and something any pregnant woman doesn't want to deal with.

Eggs are so versatile and can be eaten in so many ways. They’re great for breakfast and can be included in lunch with a salad or even a fried egg on a burger for dinner. Best of all, they are cheap and really filling too because of all the protein they have. So pregnant women, go to the store and stock up on eggs. Get creative with them too!
