With two extraordinarily talented parents, 48-year old Elon Musk and 32-year old singer Grimes’ baby boy X Æ A-12 has been given an extraordinary name. Born on May 4, 2020, the child has been given a name that needs some explanation on how to pronounce it. Elon Musk recently appeared on the “Joe Rogan Experience” podcast on Thursday, May 7th, and during the interview, Rogan asked Musk how to pronounce the newborn’s name.
Musk looked uncomfortable and somewhat embarrassed while trying to explain and Rogan wasn’t helping the issue with his laughter. Musk stated that “X” is simply pronounced as “X,” and that the “Æ” symbol is pronounced as “Ash.” Then there is the A-12, spoken without the dash. So, “X ash a12” is how to pronounce the child’s name. At least, according to Musk.
While Musk did his best to explain, Grimes has provided a different explanation, including the meanings of the different parts of their son's name. While posting on May 6th to her Instagram account in celebration of appearing on Italy’s “Vogue” cover, she let fans in on how she is feeling post-birth. Grimes also provided her translation of how to say her son’s name.
According to her, it is simply “X a I," no ash or A-12. On Tuesday evening, May 5th, Grimes tweeted the meaning of the different parts of her son’s name. She wrote, “X is the unknown variable” and Æ is “my elven spelling of Ai (love &/or Artificial intelligence).” A-12 is the precursor to the SR-71, “our favourite aircraft. No weapons, no defences, just speed. Great in battle, but non-violent.” She adds that “A” is a reference to “Archangel, my favourite song.” But it seems that Grimes’ explanation didn’t help the fans much. One poster stated, “Wait so yall weren’t joking???” whereas another wrote, “You realize this a human child and not an EP right”?
Musk and Grimes met at a party and let the world in on the fact that they were dating in May 2018. Grimes, whose true name is Claire Boucher, revealed in January 2020 that she was expecting with her boyfriend Musk. She posted a photo of her topless, pregnant self on her Instagram account to tell the fans.
Although this is Grimes’ first child, it is the sixth for Musk and he seems to have a propensity for somewhat unusual names. He has five other sons with first wife, Justine. Twins named Griffin and Xavier, and triplets named Damian, Saxon, and Kai. The new name has garnered a lot of discussions and may create more between Musk and Grimes over renaming their son. Having been born in California, the state may declare the name illegal because it has laws stating that baby names can only contain the 26 letters of the alphabet. We can only hope for the child’s sake that his parents’ come up with something he won’t have to explain the rest of his life.
