For the first time in 12 years, a baby was born on the secluded islands of Fernando de Noronha off the coast of Brazil. The parents weren't expecting this bundle of joy and the baby was just as much a surprise to them as it was to the rest of the island! The 22-year-old mother had given birth the year before and had no indication that she was expecting again.
The hospital in this remote area doesn't have a maternity ward and requires expecting mothers to travel to the mainland to give birth. As intrusive as it sounds, the government here also controls the population growth to keep it low in order to protect the near-perfect environment. They're protecting the gorgeous white sandy beaches, enjoyable hiking trails, and precious marine life. The island is also home to a UNESCO World Heritage Site that protects endangered species such as turtles, dolphins, and sharks.
Australian news reported on this event. The mother was quoted as saying she was "dumbstruck" by what happened. She apparently felt a pain, went to the bathroom to see what was going on, and looked down to see a baby dangling from between her legs. The baby's father helped her by delivering the little one and was also in disbelief.

Fernando de Noronha is made up of 21 islands and is located 217 miles off the coast of Brazil. It's located closest to the state of Pemebuco and takes five (!?) days to get there. Tourism is the main attraction, and we can only imagine how magical it would be to stay in this island paradise! Just one island is inhabited and it makes up only 7.1 square miles. Only 2,718 people live on this island.
We see these surprise pregnancies happening. There was even a whole show about it, but however hard it is imagining that it can happen, know that it really does. Who would make this stuff up? Just be glad it didn't happen to you.
