Gabrielle Union celebrated the 1-month birthday of her daughter Kaavia James Wade by sharing an emotional video about her journey to motherhood.
The actress did not hold back in the video, which she posted to her Instagram account on Monday. She shared footage of Kaavia's birth, as well as some critical events that led Union and husband Dwyane Wade meeting their precious angel.
Union revealed that her fertility struggle was not about getting pregnant, it was about her ability to carry the baby to term. She explained that holding the baby became her stumbling block and led her to be diagnosed with adenomyosis.
Her condition is a form of endometriosis where the endometrial tissue exists within and grows into the uterine wall. It makes staying pregnant extremely difficult and was the cause of Union's multiple miscarriages.
Wade and Union did not let her condition stop them from dreaming of having their own family. They decided to hire a gestational carrier, just like Kim Kardashian-West and Kanye West. Their surrogate carried their own embryo, so she has no genetic ties to their daughter.
Along with footage of their baby shower, the couple also shared the first moment they met their daughter. They were in the delivery room when Kaavia was born, via C-section. The couple also sends a lovely message to their baby girl. The actress and basketball player both express their joy, happiness, and gratefulness to have had their journey have a happy ending.
The entire video is just over 8-minutes long and worth every minute. However, grab some tissues because it is a tearjerker. One especially heartwarming moment is when Gabrielle Union talks about how she was concerned she would not bond with her baby because she did not carry her. That insecurity went right out the window the second she saw her daughter.
Dwyane Wade also has a teary-eyed moment when he explains the misconception of surrogacy, especially among celebrities. He sets the record straight on that, as well as shared that there is no one specific path to motherhood. Wade is completely right. Each path is different, and people should not be judged for their path.
There is no doubt Union was put through the wringer on her journey to motherhood. Now though, she can move forward and focus on her beautiful family.
