Trigger warning: child death
Duluth, Georgia police have arrested Khaliq Woods, 23, this weekend in connection with the death of his 9-week-old baby. According to police, Woods is charged with murder after he brought the unresponsive child to a local hospital and told police he had been "grabbing and throwing the infant in the air."
Police, who responded to Northside Hospital - Duluth at 7:30 am on Saturday, had been notified by the hospital following the child’s death. The investigation revealed that Woods had brought the baby to the hospital on Friday night after realizing she was unresponsive.
Police arrested Woods as a result of significant bruising on the child and her death. Woods was also charged with aggravated assault, cruelty to a child in the first degree and battery-family violence.
Officers say Woods had been watching the child at his home in the 4100 block of Plantation Trace since about 1 pm the day before. The suspect told police he had been playing with her “by throwing her up in the air and then catching her.”

Woods reportedly put the baby in his bed at around 10 pm, and when he went in to check on her at 2 am, she reportedly had difficulty breathing. Woods later told police he tried feeding the baby, but she wouldn’t take a bottle or pacifier. He added that the baby “wasn’t moving normal like kids do ... and he assumed the baby was just tired.” Three hours later at 5 am, he finally took the baby to the hospital.
After arriving, doctors determined the baby had already died. A nurse told police that the baby had bruising on her torso and arms that appeared to be recent. A detective added that the baby was cold to the touch when her father arrived at the hospital. Police arrested and charged Woods with murder due to the significant bruising and death of the baby.
However, Duluth police spokesperson Officer Ted Sadowski stated the cause of death is still unclear. Police say Woods and the baby’s mother, who left the child with her father for the weekend, had recently separated and he was dating another woman. Woods was booked Saturday into the Gwinnett County jail, where he remains. Kimberly Hernandez, the 9-week-old baby’s mother, has defended Woods, saying the baby died in her sleep. In an Instagram live video, she said Woods “loved that baby” and won’t blame him for her death.
