Parents punished a teenage girl by making her stand at a busy intersection over the weekend holding a sign reading, "I lied."

It might have been a simple act of punishment, but considering the number of accidents in that area, it could have turned out to be a fatal idea. The video posted on social media sparked a debate about different styles of parenting.

The child stood in the median of Veterans Parkway and Santa Barbara Boulevard with the sign in her hand that read, "I lied. I humiliated my mother and myself." There was a woman standing with her all the while, and water was also at her disposal. Witnesses also said that other adults were watching them from the sidewalks.

Ashley Atty, who posted the video on Facebook, feels it's a fine style of parenting, and the child will think twice before lying in the future. She wrote, "I'm sure that girl will never lie again because that was embarrassing."

But, there were others with a difference in opinion.

Randy Miller, from Cape Coral, said, “That's pretty drastic, the action she took to try to force some kind of correction on her, and I doubt it has an effect. Might shove her the other way, you know?"

The primary concern was the safety of the child. Punishment is to correct a child for an incorrect deed, but it shouldn't jeopardize their safety.

One witness, who choose to remain anonymous said that she saw the video on social media at around 2 pm and when she crossed the area at 4:30 pm the duo was still standing at the same place. This raised her concern, and she gave a call to the police.

She said, “How many times have we heard already in the last couple months that kids are getting hit and killed, even an adult? You would’ve lost your kid for something – trying to prove a point when, in my opinion, there are much better ways to do so.”

Police were called to the intersection after getting a call about a traffic hazard. They addressed the issue, and no one was hurt.

The stepfather of the teenager reported that the 17-year-old had been lying to her mother repeatedly over the last couple of months. Having found no solution, the mother had given her two options for punishment: being grounded for the entire summer or public shaming.

So, it was the girl who chose the punishment, and the stepfather supports her decision "She understands, and I think she’s a better person for it because she chose to do what she needed to do to get out of the problems she had caused us.”

We all get to choose for ourselves and learn from our mistakes – hopefully, the teenager will also learn from this punishment.
