What Is The Great Cloth Diaper Change?
In 2011, Judy Aagard set out to claim a Guinness Book of World Records title for the most simultaneous cloth diaper changes. Judy was a notable figure in the cloth community and she built a fandom around her Tiny Tots diapering business. Her ultimate goal was to promote and celebrate the use of sustainable, reusable cloth diapers. The first year Judy hosted a Great Cloth Diaper Change, it went global! Five countries, 127 locations, and just over 5,000 participants changed diapers together - some in the middle of the night!
The extreme popularity was more than Judy had ever imagined, and she knew the event would benefit from outside help. Between 2012 and 2017 The Real Diaper Association, a nonprofit with a mission to normalize cloth diapering, led the global event. Each year, the event became more and more popular! Ultimately, the event peaked in 2014 with 8,459 participants. It was the last year the Guinness Book of World Records accepted entries for “24-hour multiple venue” records, which means the Great Cloth Diaper Change still holds the record!
Shifts In The Cloth Diapering Community
After successfully hosting six consecutive Great Cloth Diaper Changes, The Real Diaper Association closed its doors in January 2018. It wasn't the only cloth diaper nonprofit to fold in 2018; The Rebecca Foundation collapsed amid great controversy. Even after the formal closure of the host organization, grassroots organizers carried on! In eleven countries, 2,521 babies were changed into fresh cloth diapers. 2019’s Great Cloth Diaper Change is scheduled for April 27th and 28th - local hosts choose the day AND time that best fits their schedule. This year’s event will be a return to locally-driven grassroots organization that inspired Judy Aagard in the first place.
What To Expect
Great Cloth Diaper Changes are mostly self-guided and locally driven. That means each event will have its own flavor! Events can be held at public or private spaces; most are held in public meeting spaces like cloth diapering stores or libraries. In previous years, the GCDC took place at the exact same time globally. In 2019, each host can choose their own location, time, and one of two dates on the last weekend in April. Typically the changes are short, sweet, and to the point. You can expect to be in and out in fifteen minutes, but most events allow parents to linger for a while. The Great Cloth Diaper Change is a great opportunity to meet like-minded parent friends!
