With each baby, time can be of the essence. For one Houston mom-to-be, time ran out. With a birth plan set in place and on the way to her third delivery, this mom had little stress. Assuming things would go as planned would be a mistake.

Around 2 AM, however, the baby was coming and waiting for hospital personnel wasn’t an option. Houston Firestation 67 was alerted to the emergency as the baby was coming into the world. Joseph Leon, a firefighter working for the station, arrived on the scene just before the end of his shift early Monday morning. The woman had been Enroute to the delivery wing of a nearby hospital on the North Freeway.

Emergency personnel face difficult situations throughout each shift on a routine basis. This being another child delivery response was seen as typical. Leon describes his encounter as just doing his job. Nothing heroic about his response.  Often times, emergency personnel do not receive the recommendations afforded to them so it is not unusual that he felt this way. The life of this young mother and child were ultimately in the hands of those responding and incredible measures, although it is routine, are still worthy of recognition.

Leon and his team arrived at the van pulled to the side of I-45 at the intersection of I-45 South and Parker Road. The baby has already been delivered, giving mom all the props, Leon is quoted saying, “Mom did pretty much all the work."

Leon swaddled the baby in a warm cloth to create a soothing effect from the unconventional birth just after paramedics cut the umbilical cord. The veteran fireman was unphased, having spent a decade serving the Houston fire department. With mom and baby safely whisked away to a nearby hospital, for now, Leon’s work here is done. Hats off to all the first responders and a giant kudos to this momma for her calm, yet dramatic delivery on this eventful night.

For all involved, it is a positive outcome to a scary situation with tons of thanks being offered up for quick responses and efficient procedures being put into place in this family's time of need.
