In the U.S., if you work for an employer with 50 or more employees within 75 miles and have worked at least 1,250 hours over the past year, you are eligible for Family and Medical Leave Act. This gives you up to 12 weeks of unpaid time to spend
with your newborn. (It can also be used for other reasons.)
Many employers give you more leave on top of this or, awesomely, give paid leave. Working Mother keeps a list of best companies for working moms and many of these give lots of great leave and benefits.
