Hunter McGrady is currently expecting her first child, but she was thrown a curveball when she contracted COVID-19 seven months into her pregnancy.

The plus-size model revealed her diagnosis during the newest episode of her Model Citizen podcast, PEOPLE Magazine reports. Hunter said that while the public wasn’t aware, she actually tested positive for coronavirus when she was seven months along. She said she was surprised to learn she had the infection since she believed she was taking as many precautions as possible. Still, Hunter believes she contracted the virus during a photoshoot for work.

“The only time I had my mask off was when I was shooting,” the mother-to-be explained.

She added that there were only four people on set, and even though they were social distancing, the precautions weren’t enough. Hunter eventually passed the coronavirus to her husband, Brian Keys.

Luckily, Hunter said that her symptoms weren’t as severe as other people have experienced. She said it resembled a sinus infection, though both she and her partner lost their sense of smell while sick. This caused another issue, however, as Hunter says it prevented them from being able to initially detect a plumbing issue in their basement. “It was backed up in the street and we had to get all the flooring downstairs ripped out,” the model recalled.

During the podcast episode, Hunter added that her health problems didn’t end with her COVID-19 diagnosis. Shortly after receiving from coronavirus, the 28-year-old learned that she had preeclampsia.

Healthline explains preeclampsia is a common complication in pregnancy and includes symptoms like high blood pressure, severe headaches, changes in vision, and abdominal pain.

Hunter’s health struggles were exacerbated by the fact that she lost her younger brother, Tynan, 23, at the beginning of May due to a car accident, Yahoo! News reports. He was three weeks away from graduating from San Francisco State University with a degree in computer engineering. A Go Fund Me page has been set up to raise funds to buy computer engineering supplies for youth in his honor.

The Swimsuit Illustrated model originally announced her pregnancy in March. She exclusively confirmed the news to PEOPLE Magazine, describing it as a “rainbow at the end of the storm” in reference to the difficulties that 2020 brought.

This will be Hunter’s first child with her husband, though he has a daughter from a previous relationship. She and Brian were married in 2019 during a private ceremony held in California.
