It’s a common misconception that second babies will be easier since parents “know what they’re doing now” and have an idea of what to expect. Unfortunately, that usually is not the case because every pregnancy and every baby is completely unique. For Bachelor in Paradise winner Jade Roper Tolbert, she is definitely experiencing this with her son, 4-month old Brooks Easton, who has been going through a difficult feeding journey since he was born.

Roper posted to Instagram about their feeding struggles. She shared that at Brooks’ last doctor’s appointment, his pediatrician was concerned about his weight gain, or lack thereof. Roper wrote that Brooks is only in the 5th percentile for weight. She then explained, “We’ve dealt with dairy and soy allergies that left him crying for hours on hours with malabsorption, a lip and tongue tie we were advised not to revise (although they give him a poor latch), milk supply issues, foremilk/hindmilk imbalance. It feels like the list goes on”.

These struggles have caused Roper to feel guilty (which she shouldn’t) because she just wants to do everything she can to help her son. She reached out to her followers asking if any of them had success “[getting] through the worry and the guilt” or how to “not over obsess with the progress”. Many followers have commented sharing their experiences with babies in the “low percentiles” and encouraged Roper than things will turn around with Brooks.

Even with these obstacles, Roper noted that she is still breastfeeding but has had to change her diet in order to best help Brooks. She has cut diary, soy, and may need to take beef out of her diet. She also mentioned that she is supplementing with a hypoallergenic formula, and giving extra feeds when possible.

Not only has Brooks’ feeding journey been unconventional, but his entrance into this world was also too. Roper felt her water break while at home with her daughter, Emerson now three-years-old, and husband Tanner Tolbert. But she knew Brooks was coming fast. With a quick call to 911, EMTs helped Roper deliver her son in her closet. Just a few days afterward, she told People magazine, “It’s surreal. I’m still having trouble processing it”.

Though Brooks has taken his mom on a wild ride since day one, Roper is doing everything she can to help her baby boy. Hopefully, the extra feeds and diet changes will help Brooks gain weight, and some of the “guilt” Roper is feeling can be lifted off her shoulders!
