James Van Der Beek, 42, announced this week that he’d be joining the season 28 cast of Dancing with the Stars. The Dawson’s Creek star also shared a video of his kids cheering him on while watching him on Good Morning America.
Van Der Beek and his wife Kimberly have five children: Olivia, 8, Joshua, 7, Annabel, 5, Emilia, 3, and Gwendolyn, 14 months. In the clip, the kids chant “Daddy! Daddy! Daddy!” while watching their father on the show. The heartwarming Instagram video is captioned, “Squad for life ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️.”
The actor, who often shares pics of his beautiful kids is clearly a devoted father. “All I can think about is I miss my kids, which is a good thing!” he wrote. “Been away from my kids for literally 11.5 hours.”
Interestingly, Van Der Beek has already appeared on DWTS, although not in real life. The actor took part in the show on the ABC sitcom Don’t Trust the B in Apartment 23, which aired for two seasons from April 11, 2012 to January 15, 2013. Van Der Beek, playing a fictionalized version of himself, was shown wondering which pro dancing partner would help him beat his rival Dean Cain, aka Superman.
At the time, it never occurred to the actor that he would appear on DWTS in real life. “I think it’s more fun to do it this way. You can play it for laughs and not have to do all that work!” he told Parade in 2012. He recently admitted, though, that he “always secretly wanted to do it,” explaining that he was the one who pitched the DWTS storyline on Don’t Trust the B.
“And then we did it, and I thought, ‘Well, okay, I’ve done it,'” he added. “I’ve been writing and creating, and I just sold a show. We’re going to start production probably in about four months. And this came up, and I thought, ‘That’s crazy … I love crazy. Do I want to do this? Yes!’ And so I’m here.”
Van Der Beek will be joined by the Supremes’ Mary Wilson, Queer Eye’s Karamo Brown, The Bachelorette‘s Hannah Brown, supermodel Christie Brinkley, country star Lauren Alaina, NFL legend Ray Lewis, The Office star Kate Flannery, pop star Ally Brooke, Lamar Odom, Kel Mitchell and Donald Trump’s former press secretary Sean Spicer on season 28 of DWTS. As for the pro dance partner pairings, they won’t be announced until the premiere.
Van Der Beek will soon be seen in Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, an upcoming film written, directed, edited, and starring Kevin Smith, where once again he will play a fictionalized version of himself. The actor married Kimberly Brook, a business consultant, on August 1, 2010, in a ceremony at the Kabbalah Center in Tel Aviv, Israel. Interestingly, his last name is Dutch, meaning "from the creek," yet there is no connection between his surname and the hit show he starred in, Dawson’s Creek.
