James Van Der Beek is a father to five children. He and his wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek share Olivia, 9, Joshua, 7, Annabel, 5, Emilia, 3, and Gwendolyn, 19 months.

He is such a good father to all of his children and a fabulous husband to his wife. James shared on an Instagram post of him spending one-on-one time with his Joshua while on a canoe. James decided to take the moment to share some fatherly advice to all the new fathers out there. He captioned, "Sometimes nervous fathers-to-be ask me for advice, and I try to be careful, because every kid is different, and so is every dad. But one thing that feels pretty universal... is the value in trying to be present, and treating each moment as an opportunity for connection." He then continues by sharing the different types of ways he has spent time with his kids, "Whether you’re on vacation in an RV or changing a diaper in a public restroom, celebrating a soccer goal or trying to calm them down when they’re crying or throwing up or hungry or angry or crazy or all of the above... if you look at the situation simply as the apparatus within which you get to forge a bond with your kid... you’ve won."

The Dancing with the Stars alum continues, "Because you’ve created space for your own special brand of magic to kick in. No father is perfect - we’re all human and we all get overwhelmed at times - but if connection is your goal... you can’t really screw up. Even when you screw up. And you’ll probably find yourself happier than you ever have before."

The Van Der Beek's had a very rough 2019. They announced that they were pregnant with their sixth child. The family was very excited and ready to add another kiddo to their gang. They thought that everything was safe because Kimberely had made it into her second trimester. However, the baby's heart stopped beating. The family was absolutely devastated. Not only did they have a miscarriage but Kimberly's life was in danger and she spent time in the hospital. James shared on his Instagram after Kimberly left the hospital, "Grateful that she’s now recovering, but we’ve only just begun unpacking the layers of this one." He concluded his post, "As many of you have said, “There are no words...” and it’s true. Which is why in a time like this it’s enough to know that you’re there. Grieving AND counting our blessings today."

It has been a tough recovery for the family! We are hoping that they are able to find some peace in the year 2020 and we hope they can pick up the pieces! We hope that the family is able to find comfort in this year and that they are able to have a healthy one.
