After a bitter divorce, Aryn Drake-Lee, the ex-wife of Grey’s Anatomy’s Jessie Williams is finally speaking out and giving her side of the story.
Jessie filed for divorce from Aryn in 2017 after five years of marriage. The former couple share two children: 5-year old Sadie and 3-year old Maceo. Almost immediately, the exes entered into a battle over custody and child support, some of which is still ongoing.
The mom-of-two opened up to People about how their dramatic divorce began affecting their kids. “When you start spinning, the children start spinning, so even if you’re looking at them and you’re telling them everything is fine, they know it’s not fine because they can feel it’s not fine,” Aryn explained.
When asked how much the two have divulged to their children, Aryn responded by explaining she tries to be as open as possible with them. “I talk to them on their level,” she continued. “It’s also okay for the children to see me crying, to see that I’m having a hard day today. Because that lets them know that when they have those hard days, there’s also room for that.”
Shortly after announcing their divorce, Jessie was spotted getting close with actress Minka Kelly, fuelling speculation over whether the two got together before or after his separation. Neither Jessie nor Aryn have publicly commented on the rumours. Minka eventually denied the speculation online after receiving various hate comments on her post.
Though things between Minka and Jessie have fizzled out, this year the actor has most recently been linked to 28-year old Taylour Paige. However, his custody battle with his ex-wife continues to wage on. As of this June, Hollywood Life reported that Aryn was claiming her ex still owed her almost $1 million in past due in support. Earlier in the year, the court had ordered Jessie to pay $50,000 per month in child support and $50,695 per month in spousal support. Yikes!
If she’s learned one thing following the divorce, Aryn says it’s that she now knows the importance of self-care. “I had to get very aggressive with my self-care so that I could make sure that I was going to be able to be sound and grounded, and balanced enough,” she explained.
As for what she likes to do for ‘me’ time, Aryn shared, “I started doing some positive meditation, which I had not been doing before. I got more serious about yoga practice, and I had to go every day.” Hopefully that means these exes are on the road to acrimonious co-parenting!
