About a year before we decided we wanted to start a family, I decided that I wanted to work from home. Despite having a Master’s Degree in Literacy Education and being a licensed and experienced elementary teacher, I knew that there was nothing that I wanted more than to stay home with my kids; and teaching certainly wasn’t going to allow me to do that. If I wanted to stay home, though, I still needed to work, and that’s how I became a freelance writer (and I have been once since 2009).
During my search for work-from-home jobs, I was really amazed to find that there were literally dozens of options. I happen to love writing, so that’s the route I took. However, if writing isn’t your thing, that doesn’t mean you can’t work from home. There are so many job opportunities out there – and no, they don’t involve stuffing envelopes or shady pyramid schemes. Whether you’re a parent who is looking to work from home, or you just want to quit the rat race, here’s a look at 15 jobs that will pay you real money even as you work from home. Isn’t the Internet a wonderful thing?
I’m starting this list out with my work-at-home line of work, and honestly, I love it.
As a freelance writer, what I write varies from day-to-day. I write content for websites, blog posts for company websites, informational and opinion editorials, product descriptions, newsletters, eBooks and so much more.
Though it’s not always steady money, eventually, if you build up a decent client base, you can definitely make an income that you can comfortably live on. You may be able to charge your own rate, or clients may offer you a flat rate. For example, you can charge per word, or a client may pay you per piece. Income for a freelance writer varies, but once you get established, you could earn $1,000 a week – or more!
As a virtual assistant, you will provide services to companies, organizations, and individuals. Some of the services you will provide include researching, editing, desktop publishing, writing, counseling, coaching, booking and so much more. In a nutshell, you’ll be a Jack (or Jane) of all trades.
The amount you make will vary for this work-at-home job, but hourly rates can range between from $15 to more than $100 an hour!
As a transcriptionist, you will convert the spoken word into the written word. You’ll either listen to recorded or live conversations or dictation, and you’ll turn those spoken words into a text document. The fields that generally need this type of service include the legal and medical industries, though various businesses also require transcription. You could also land a gig transcribing for television shows (you know, like captioning).
Like all virtual jobs, the rate of pay varies for transcribing, and you can make anywhere from $10 to $100 an hour.
If you’re a linguist and you are fluent in at least two languages, you could work from home as a translator. Companies, doctors, scientists and various other professionals often need translators to translate documents or the spoken word to another language. For example, a researcher may need to have a study translated from Spanish to English.
The income for this job can be quite lucrative. Many established translators earn as much as $100,000 annually!
You know when you call your financial institution or your car insurance company and you speak to a representative? Well, who you are speaking to is a call center representative. Many companies require the assistance of these professionals. They answer questions, provide valuable information and direct people to the proper resources. To reduce overhead costs, many companies employ virtual representatives, which offers you, the work-at-home employment seeker, another industry to consider.
The income for this position also varies, but it can range from an hourly rate to a yearly rate, and many call center reps earn $50,000 a year.
If you know how to design a website, you can make a lucrative income from home. Today, a website is the essence of all business; from doctors to dentists, and from merchandise providers to travel agents, you can develop websites for these professionals and more.
You can either work freelance and charge your own rates as a web developer, or you can work for a company that employ virtual web developers and pays an hourly or annual rate.
Do you love the idea of helping others fulfill their dreams? If so, you might be interested in working from home as a travel agent. In this role, you will help people plan vacations by designing and suggesting packages and booking trips for them. If you work for a company, you may even be able to score some pretty sweet discounts for your own travel.
You can work with a company and earn an hourly or annual salary, or you can start up your own travel agency and charge your own rates.
Education is such an important part of life, but for many, a traditional educational setting isn’t an option. Whether it’s tutoring or teaching an online college course, you can work from home as an online educator. If you have a teaching degree, you could earn an income from home teaching children, teenagers or adults from home.
You don’t have to work online to work as an educator from home; you can offer your teaching services in your home. Students can come to you and you can provide instruction right out of your living room, kitchen or home office and charge an hourly rate for your services. I used to do this, and it was quite lucrative. However, do note that you will need to have a quiet location that is free from distraction in order to do this (I stopped when I had kids.)
If you are knowledgeable about computers, working from home as a tech support specialist is an option to consider. You’ll provide help to people who are having issues with their computers, printers or other technology. You’ll provide your service over the phone or via computer networking.
You can either land a gig with a company that hires virtual tech support specialists, or you can start your own business, find your own clients and charge your own rates.
Do you have a passion for grammar? Does it irk you when you see people use the word “their” instead of “there”, or “to” instead of “too”? If so, you could work from home as a proofreader. Your role will be going over the content for websites, blog posts, newsletters, eBooks and even manuscripts, looking for spelling and grammatical errors and making the necessary corrections.
As with many online jobs, you could work with a company that hires virtual proofreaders, or work for businesses that require perfect copy (such as Internet marketing firms). You could also start your own virtual proofreading business and offer your services to anyone who needs their copy polished.
An Internet marketer is someone who uses the Internet to market or advertise their business. In other words, they use the Internet to market the products and services that they sell.
To become a successful Internet marketer, you’ll need to choose a market, which will depend on the products you want to sell or the services you want to offer. For example, you could offer your services as a professional Internet marketer, helping others who wish to do the same choose a niche, develop their websites, create copy for their sites and so forth.
Internet marketing can really be quite lucrative. It’s not unheard of for successful Internet marketers to make 6 figure incomes.
As an affiliate marketer, instead of promoting your own products and services, you will promote the products and services offered by others. Every time someone purchases something as a result of your marketing efforts, you will earn a commission from the company you are marketing for. For example, Amazon offers an affiliate program. They provide you with an affiliate link, which is attached to any of the products that you are marketing. You would market the products you are interested in via a blog, a website, social media, etc, and every time someone clicks on your link to purchase whatever it is that you are advertising, you will make a commission from Amazon.
Niche blogging is an excellent option for affiliate marketing. You choose a niche, such as parenting, and create a blog that is geared toward that niche. You would then include links to products that Amazon – or whatever site you are working with – offers that are relevant to your niche on your blog. For example, if you write a blog post about art projects for kids, you could include affiliate links to art supplies throughout the post. If someone is interested in your suggestions, they just have t click on the link and voila! – They can quickly and easily make a purchase, and you will earn a commission.
Owning a business is an excellent way to make an income from home. If you are interested in this idea, but you don’t have a business idea or experience, you could become a franchise owner. Essentially, it’s a business-in-a-box. A company designs the model, the system, creates brand awareness and provides you with the products you need to make money. You purchase the franchise, and then you earn whatever the business makes.
Ebay is one of the most popular buying-and-selling platforms on the Internet, and many people make an impressive income selling products on the site. Whether you are interested in selling items that you already own, antiques or brand new items, such as clothing or toys, you could open an Ebay store and sell those products via your store. Become a top-rated seller with an awesome reputation and your business can really take off.
If you have the ability to make homemade items, selling your own products could be your ticket to working at home. Etsy is a very popular site for selling homemade products. Just open up a shop, create a name, feature the products that you make on your shop and advertise. When people are interested in what you are selling, they make a purchase and you deliver. For example, you could sell items that you crochet, jewelry, homemade cards or art. You can also sell vintage items that you didn’t make yourself, but that you procured.
