For many couples, experiencing fertility struggles can put a strain on their relationship. But for John Legend and Chrissy Teigen, it actually brought the two of them closer.

Legend recently sat down for an exclusive interview with People where he recalled his and his wife’s experience undergoing reproductive assistance. “[Parenthood] deepens your love for your partner because you see them in a different light going through, in our case, the trouble of actually having a kid,” the musician, 33, explained.

The celebrity couple has welcomed two kids in the last several years with the help of IVF. Their daughter Luna was born in 2016, while son Miles was welcomed in 2018.

The Teigen-Legend family definitely hasn’t had an easy time expanding their family. Teigen initially opened up about her struggles with infertility in 2015 when she admitted she’d been trying for years to get pregnant. She later wrote a candid essay about her struggles with post-partum depression two years later. Despite their struggles, however, we’re glad to hear that it’s only brought these two closer together.

The father-of-two went on to add that seeing his wife struggle with PPD following pregnancy also allowed their marriage to flourish. “Then Chrissy’s going through postpartum depression,” Legend said. “You just see different sides of that person, and if you go through it and you learn from it and you come out the other end better for it, then it deepens and strengthens your relationship.”

Legend, who was recently named People’s Sexiest Man Alive, went on to discuss the positive impact music has had on his young family. “I love seeing my kids discover music and playing on the piano with them,” he told the publication. “They make us laugh all the time. Luna has a sense of actual comedy. She is so much like Chrissy it’s uncanny.

He believes his daughter’s resemblance to her mother is why they have such a strong relationship. Legend added, “I guess that’s why we get along though. We hang out together all the time. I love taking her to school and I’ll take her to lunch just the two of us a lot.” As for his son, however, Legend says he takes after himself. “[He’s] a little more mellow like me,” he said. “He just runs around and falls. He’s like a wrecking ball! We laugh a lot.”
