There seem to be more and more stories of women being “mom-shamed.” Mom-shaming is when someone criticizes a mother for her choices, such as bottle-feeding instead of breastfeeding or letting her toddler play with a tablet. Although there are recommendations for raising children, it’s up to the parents to decide which they will follow. Instead of being quick to judge and criticize a mother for doing her job, we should praise her for raising a human.

Teen Mom 2 star Kailyn Lowry, a mother of three who has been mom-shamed before, was recently criticized for her 2-year-old son, Lux Russell, still being in diapers. She shared an adorable video of him dancing to music in just a diaper. Lowry captioned the video with several crying emojis, meaning she loved the dancing so much it made her cry. While most felt the same as she did, there were comments that said, “Lux needs to be out of diapers”. Lowry didn’t appreciate these comments and proudly responded with, “I'm not going to rush him into something based on someone else's standards...What works for us is waiting until he's ready. Not when I'M ready."

Lowry is also going through a difficult time with her ex-boyfriend Chris Lopez, Lux’s father, and raising Lux’s two older brothers at the same time. This mom has quite a lot on her plate, so it’s understandable that she may not want to fight the messy uphill battle that potty-training can be.

There are a lot of things a two-year-old should be able to do. A two-year-old should be using around 100 words, and put together two-word sentences. Two-year-olds should be able to run around and climb on playground equipment without assistance. Two-year-olds should also be able to point to their body parts and name them. They should be getting around 12 hours of sleep at night with a 1-2 hour nap during the day. They should be able to feed themselves and start using a utensil more frequently. The list goes on and on, but just because a two-year-old should be doing something, doesn’t mean they will.

Potty-training, before a child is ready, is just an endless mess that honestly isn’t worth it. Some toddlers are ready to start potty-training before their second birthday, and some simply are not interested until they are older. Parents can expose and encourage their children to try new things, but it’s ultimately up to the child to decide whether they will do it. Children will reach milestones at different times in their lives, and mothers should not be blamed for it.
