Manhattan Police Officers Deliver Baby In Backseat Of Mother's Car

Two NYPD officers delivered a baby in the backseat of a car last Saturday night. The universe seemed to be watching over the woman because in her time of need, police officers who just so happened to be trained in delivering babies turned up at the right time. Thanks to their quick response, both the mother and the baby are doing well.

Michael Schiaffo and Ronald Vincent were heading up the West Side Highway as a part of a Strategic Response Convoy group. They didn’t expect their night at all to involve delivering a baby in the backseat of a car. However, when it came down to it, they did their duty and helped out someone in need.

The two spotted a family frantically waving for help. They split from their convoy and pulled-over to see what was going on. They saw that a woman was going into labour in the car, and she was crowning—meaning they didn't have enough time to drive the woman to the hospital. The couple was on their way to the hospital, but their baby decided that she was not going wait any longer to take her first breath. Luckily, Schiaffo had previous training in delivering babies. In the past, he was part of the FDNY, and he had delivered four babies as an EMT.

With his colleagues as his support, Schiaffo went to work delivering the baby. Everyone in the situation helped him. They passed him gloves, towels, and whatever else he needed to safely do the job. The big man didn’t have much room to work, but he was determined to help this new mother. Inside the couple’s small sedan, the officer encouraged the mom as she pushed without complaint. In five minutes, they helped deliver a baby girl in the backseat of a tiny car.

Both the mom and the baby are doing well. Vincent stated that he was glad Schiaffo was there, or else the whole situation could have gone another way. Thankfully, they had someone on hand who had experience delivering babies. Everyone there, however, is also to thank for helping Schiaffo deliver the baby girl. The whole team saved lives that day in the back of a small sedan.
