If there’s one thing that we’ve already learned about Meghan Markle, it’s that she’s the kind of person who will do things her way, regardless of what people have to say about it or what the royal protocol might be, too. As a matter of fact, the Duchess of Sussex has proven in the short time that her son Archie Harrison has been born that she would rather choose motherhood over her own royal duties. While that might sound surprising to some, to others they totally understand where Meghan is coming from. Here are ten times she chose being a mother over her royal duties and obligations.

10 She Broke Royal Protocol At The Hospital

For many decades it has been a royal tradition for parents to show off their new bundle of joy on the steps of St. Mary’s hospital in London as a little treat for the public and the media. While a lot of royals have done in the past – like Prince William and Kate Middleton – Meghan refused to do it. Instead, she opted to have a private birth and spend her first few hours with little Archie as a family of three along with her husband Prince Harry, according to People Magazine. She also refused to get dressed up for the cameras the same way Kate Middleton has done so in the past, too.

9 She’s Re-Writing The Royal Rules

A lot of royal observers were also surprised to find out that Meghan Markle decided to start her own little tradition after Archie was born. She and Prince Harry decided to introduce their son with a small, private photo call with just three media outlets present.

The couple rewrote the rules by being the first royal couple to handle their baby’s “public presentation” so to speak by doing it on their own terms. No one in the royal family has ever had a photo call following the birth of their children. Clearly, it was part of Meghan’s plan all along.

8 She Refused To Meet With The U.S. President

Prince Harry once famously said that whatever Meghan wants, Meghan gets. While no one knows if this is true, there’s one thing we know for certain: if Meghan Markle doesn’t want to meet with someone, she doesn’t. According to ABC News, that apparently was the case when President Donald Trump of the United States came to visit Queen Elizabeth in London with the rest of his family. Meghan wanted no part in the visit and decided to stay home with her son instead. Meghan was heavily criticized by the press for the move, but it didn’t seem to bother her one bit. She cited her maternity leave as an excuse.

7 She’s Working During Her Maternity Leave

And while Meghan Markle couldn’t find the time to meet with President Trump and his family while they were in London, she did find the time to meet with Beyonce and Jay-Z during the red carpet premiere of The Lion King, according to Time. This happened, despite the fact that Meghan is technically on her maternity leave. She’s also made several more brief appearances since Archie’s birth, clearly proving that she’s taking a working maternity of sorts. As much as she loves staying home with Archie, she also loves being in the spotlight, too. At least, that’s what her fans are beginning to believe.

6 She’s Reportedly On Social Media

While this is yet to be confirmed, there’s speculation that Meghan Markle might be in control of the Sussex Royal Instagram account behind the scenes, according to Harper's Bazaar. That’s because a lot of people couldn’t help but notice that some of the spellings and grammar used in the caption sound more American than they do British.

With that said, Meghan has also used social media to share her son’s most important photos with the world, including the first time he got to meet Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. She also shared a sweet message for Prince Harry on Father’s Day along with a new photo of Archie, too.

5 Archie Harrison’s Christening

A lot of royal fans were pretty surprised to find out that Archie Harrison’s christening would be closed off to the public. Even though it’s long been a tradition for royal families to do a public stroll of sorts with their newborn baby outside of their church, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle refused to do with Archie. As a matter of fact, according to Express.co.uk, many royal fans were pretty disappointed with the Sussex’s decision to close off the christening from the public, with the media even highly criticizing the move, too. However, many royal observers noted that this was Harry and Meghan’s way of protecting Archie’s privacy.

4 Protecting Archie’s Godparents

With that said, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle also decided to keep the names of little Archie Harrison’s godparents private, too. Even though Prince William and Kate Middleton have announced the names of all of their children’s godparents, Archie’s have remained a mystery. And apparently, that’s the way the Duke and Duchess of Sussex want to keep it. Reports have indicated that they don’t want the public to bother or harass the godparents in any way, shape or form and that’s why they are keeping their names to themselves. So far the Sussexes have not made any comments regarding the matter.

3 She Wants To Keep Things Private

While Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have not had any interviews since the birth of their son, they’ve made it pretty clear that they want to raise Archie Harrison as a private citizen. In other words, they want him to have a childhood that is going to be as normal as possible.

Seeing how Archie is seventh in line to the British throne, he will have much more freedom to do what he wants or go wherever he wants compared to his cousins Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. Archie might get to enjoy all of the perks of being a royal, but his parents want him to be just another regular kid, too.

2 She’s Controlling His Diet

There’s even speculation that Meghan Markle might be controlling Archie Harrison’s diet, which is something that other royal mothers haven’t been able to do in the past. Because Meghan herself is very strict with her own organic diet, some reports have indicated that she might be the first mom in the monarchy to make her child’s baby food. There’s also a strong possibility that she might want Archie to adapt a “clean eating” diet or even put him on a restrictive vegan diet for that matter, too, according to Express.co.uk. So far Kensington Palace hasn’t made any comments about the young tot’s food plan seeing how he is just a few months old.

1 She Doesn’t Care What The Public Thinks

At this point, it’s safe to say that despite all of the criticism that she has gotten in her first year as a royal, Meghan Markle simply doesn’t care what the public thinks about her as a royal or as a mother for that matter. There’s even a good chance that she might not be paying attention to what her critics are saying for that matter either. Clearly, Meghan’s first priority in her life is her family, which includes Prince Harry and Archie Harrison. Her work, even though she is very passionate about it, comes second. Clearly, Meghan is someone who loves being a mother as it has so far brought plenty of joy in her life.
