It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that when it comes to parenting tips and tricks, especially when it comes to breathing and staying calm, Michael Phelps has it all figured out. After all, with 23 Olympic gold medals, Phelps knows a thing or two about staying calm, especially while in the water. That’s why he’s now sharing his techniques with parents who might be having a difficult time containing their emotions when the going gets rough.

Phelps sat down with Parents Magazine's print edition with his wife Nicole Johnson. The couple has two children, Boomer, 3, and 15-month-old Beckett. According to Phelps, there’s a certain breathing trick that helps him stay calm whenever things start to get a little too difficult with his kids.

“It’s learning patience and staying calm,” the Olympic gold medalist told Parents Magazine in a new interview. “Nicole taught Booms to take ‘lion breaths’ when he gets frustrated. There are times where I get frustrated and he says to me, ‘Dad take a breath!”

As many parents know, raising two children under the age of three is no walk in the park. Temper tantrums can happen at any time. And instead of panicking or getting upset about them, Phelps calms himself down before trying to calm his kids down. He knows that the way he approaches things will help him solve any situation he’s in with his kids a little better.

“I need to exercise,” he explains. “If I’m in a bad mood, I go for a swim. I’m better 99.9 percent of the time.”

Phelps also opened up about how raising two children has affected his marriage, his work and of course his performance in the pool. He admits that there’s no greater love in this world than the love that a parent has for his or her child.

"Before Booms was born, someone told me you’ll really understand true love when your first child is born," Michael says. "And now I do, 100 percent."

Now as far as whether or not Michael Phelps will be around for the 2020 Summer Olympic games in Tokyo, Japan remains to be seen. As many fans know, Phelps has retired many times in the past just to come back to the sport of swimming swinging and breaking records in the pool again. Right now he is currently expecting his third child with his wife Nicole.
