Mom Almost Dies After C-Section Infection Began ‘Eating Her Insides’

A woman gets a life-threatening infection after having a c-section.

Krista Parise shares her experience with a c-section that didn't go the way it was supposed to. Parise shares that she gave birth to her son, Sal, in June. She had a c-section to deliver her son and she was told that everything went the way that is was intended. Parise was discharged from the hospital and she went home. The next day she woke up from a nap and she said that she felt a little off. She had a slight fever and she called her gynecologist. She started feeling terrible pain around her stomach and her incision was hot to the touch. The doctor prescribed her painkillers. Parise said that her mother was coming over every day to help with her baby because her pain was so horrible. Her mom looked at the incision and said it didn't look normal. A couple of days later the pain was so bad that she couldn't even get out of bed. She reached down to check her incision and puss began coming out and there were even blisters around the site. She went to the emergency room with her boyfriend and they started draining the puss from her stomach. She said, "it smelled so bad." She said that there was so much puss and dead flesh coming from her.

The medical staff brought her in isolation and then took samples of the puss to see what was causing the infection. She was then rushed into surgery where she was diagnosed with Necrotizing Fasciitis, also known as flesh-eating disease. It is a life-threatening infection that eats away at the body's tissues. She was then placed into isolation following the surgery. She was given heavy antibiotics and nobody was allowed to see her while she recovered. Parise wasn't even allowed to see her son for two weeks because they were afraid of her spreading the infection to her newborn.

Parise said that having a baby is supposed to be one of the most exciting times of her life. She said that she never got to enjoy the first few weeks of her baby like other moms. The doctors told her that if she had waited one more day then she would have died. She couldn't believe she was so close to leaving her newborn baby motherless. It was definitely a scary time and she is so glad that they were able to save her life.
