Mom Defends Her Decision To Give Kids Alcohol-Inspired Names

One mom is unapologetic after giving her kids alcohol-inspired names, despite receiving a wave of criticism online.

Even though the names of her two eldest kids sound uncannily like drink brands, Sarah Mennell swears she wasn’t thinking about drinks when coming up with these baby names. Two of the mother’s five children feature boozy names: 12-year old Jackdaniel and 11-year old Tiamarie (yes- the names are spelled with no spacing or hyphen in between).

"Most of the people commenting look like they have issues themselves but we have thick skin,” Sarah told the media after receiving intense online backlash. Rather, the UK mom insists she named her son and daughter after real-life people.

😭How can they grow so fast? I used to hear many of my mom friends tell me to cherish every moment of the baby stage because it goes away in a blink of an eye. 😔And it is awfully true! Now, at #18monthsold, I find myself amazed at how my little one's brain and skills develop so quickly♥️! I recently traveled 4 days without my #MiniCooquette for a work trip and when I got back my "baby" had turned into a super talkative toddler who sings the lyrics of Moana's "Where you are" song and dances as if she were on a stage😂. She is much more energetic and vocal now, she's even putting three words together (she says "I love you"😍) and knows how to count from one to ten in Spanish on her own!💁 I'm always looking for more activities and things to show her that will help nurture her insatiable hunger for learning.📚 Of course, with her 5-minute attention span, she binges on a book and quickly moves on to the next thing and sometimes she gets bored if we do the same as always. 🙏 So I need sugestions! What books/activities would you recommend at this stage? Or now that we're slowly introducing her to a few minutes of educational screen time, we can also watch some videos!📺 Please comment with your faves!🤗 . . .

Sarah’s baby name choices came under fire after she appeared in a story for her town’s local newspaper, Hull Daily Mail, in which she commented on the high price of uniforms. But when viewers realized her unusual name choices, the story went viral.

However, the mom has no regrets about her children’s controversial names. And while her kids have received criticism in real-life for their namesakes, she adds that that haters don’t bother them either.

"Tiamarie and Jackdaniel are well used to any negativity on their names. After all anyone who knows us and the kids know the names suit,” Sarah explained.

While the mom has three other children, only one of them sports as unusual a name as her eldest two siblings- 6-year old Princess. Sarah is also a mom to 10-year old Sydney and 4-year old Albert.

“Their dad Johnny Walker works long hours. He also Fosters two kids called Stella and Glen Fiddich. Lovely family,” one online user jokingly wrote. Other people online went so far as to call the mom's choices "child abuse" and "attention-seeking."

Many parents receive criticism over their children’s baby names- but some regret it.

For instance, Teen Mom couple Tyler and Catelynn Baltierra announced they’d be naming their third daughter Tezlee ahead of her birth. However, the unusual name received so much backlash online that, once the little one arrived, the parents revealed they’d changed her name completely to Vaeda Luma.

Of the name change, Catelynn later told Us Weekly, “Every time someone would say Tezlee, we would cringe! It just wasn’t sitting with us like it did at first.” She added, “Tyler told me about the name Vaeda and I fell in love with it! It’s from the movie My Girl, which is a movie that Tyler showed me years ago.”

Would you change your baby’s name if it got so much criticism? Let us know in the comments!
