Parents of identical twins know it can be hard telling them apart, especially when you first bring them home. But this dad had a not-so-genius idea to tell the difference between his twins.
The anonymous father took to Reddit to share his wife’s horror after she came home to discover he’d used permanent marker on their babies. He felt it was the only way to tell them apart since he’d been so busy after going back to work. He added that it doesn’t help that his wife likes dressing the babies in the same outfit.
"I spent a lot of time with them but I ultimately had to go back to work after about two months. So I haven't been around them as much as I'd like,” the stressed father wrote. Evidently, his wife wasn’t impressed that he was struggling so much. At first, he suggested having the babies wear bracelets to help him tell them apart. But he says his wife said ‘no’ to the idea.
"Anytime I call one the wrong name, she gets mad and ignores me for an hour. She spends all day with them every day so she knows which is which. I can't do that,” he continued. So, the father decided to draw a dot on “one twin's right hand and one on the other's left hand” with permanent marker to make things easier for him.
However, it doesn’t sound like his wife had the reaction he was hoping for. "She got really mad at me because I needed that much help figuring out or babies' names. The issue is: I do need help,” he explained. "She spends all day with them. She got mad and left the house."
Even though a few days had passed since the incident, the Reddit poster still described his wife as “mad” and asked fellow users if they had any advice for him. Most commenters were sympathetic to the new dad’s plight and told him not to be so hard on himself.
One person, for instance, said his wife is just going to have to get used to it. "Your wife is going to have to get used to people messing up on identifying them until they get older," they wrote. "Rather than drawing on them, maybe there is something else you can do. But if she's not willing to help you, she has no right to be upset."
Another criticized the mother for her lack of understanding, writing, "It's pretty clear she isn't willing to help. She thinks he should just be able to magically tell his twins apart like she can but she doesn't realise she can tell them apart because she spends all her time with them."
However, some commenters defended the mother and said they understood why she’d be angry. "This woman just grew, carried and pushed two human beings out of her body. The hormonal swings she is dealing with are going to be extreme,” one person wrote. "On top of that she is taking care of two infants, mostly by herself, all day everyday. She can not be faulted for being a little bit unreasonable for a few months."
