Morning Sickness? Try These Over-The-Counter Nausea Cures!

DISCLAIMER: I am not a medical professional. Please speak with your doctor before making any decisions that impact your health!

Morning sickness is NOT for the faint of heart! Let's be honest and call it what it is: pregnancy-induced nausea and vomiting. It's definitely not just something that only happens in the morning, so I'm not really sure why we call it morning sickness. Some mothers never experience any morning sickness whatsoever. Others, like me, just feel nauseous and icky most of the time but are spared the more messy symptoms. On the other end of the spectrum, you have extreme nausea with constant vomiting. Hyperemesis gravidarum is NOT fun and can even land pregnant women in the hospital if they're not careful! Before you get dehydrated from being sick, try one of these over-the-counter nausea cures! I'm so glad that doctors can provide prescription medication, like Zofran, to treat morning sickness! And, of course, I'm also glad we can try other options, too!

A Gravity Band Can Prevent Nausea

Feeling icky is not fun! Via Parents Magazine

A gravity band is a bracelet worn by the person suffering from nausea. This isn't a cure used exclusively by pregnant people, actually! Most users wear gravity bands to combat persistent vertigo, while a few use it to fight motion sickness during travel. Pregnant moms have started trying gravity bands to provide relief from the extreme vomiting that can make the first trimester so awful! I'll be honest, I don't know how these things work - but the reviews are great!

Settle Your Stomach With Ginger

Quick! Make some tea! Via Fox News

This cure is one that's been around for centuries! Personally, I found that ginger teas or candies were extremely helpful for me. When my nausea seemed to be almost constant, I couldn't focus on my work. Every afternoon, I would brew a cup of ginger root tea, add a slice of lemon, and perhaps a dap of honey. Maybe you've tried this as a kid, sipping on ginger ale when you had a stomach bug! Ginger is proven to settle your stomach, no matter why you feel sick.

Fight Morning Sickness With Acupuncture

No one wants to feel sick all the time! Via SBS

If you don't want to use Eastern medicine, maybe give Western remedies a try? Acupuncture has been known to treat a wide variety of issues. Some doctors even prescribe it to their fertility patients for its effect on pregnancy and conception rates! I've never given this one a whirl, but if I have morning sickness with my next pregnancy, I certainly will! It can't hurt, right? Worst case scenario, I get to lie very still for a while in a quiet room! That's a mother's dream!

Combine Vitamin B-6 & Unisom For An Over-The-Counter Cure

Using that combo might keep you out of the ER for dehydration. Via Passion, Life, And Infertility Blog

This combination of medicine is gaining popularity with doctors, midwives, and pregnant moms alike! It's actually an over-the-counter duplicate of Diclegis, an FDA-approved prescription remedy. Instead of getting a prescription to take that medication, you can try a combination of B6 (up to 3 times per day) and a nightly Unisom. Yes, Unisom! It's commonly used to treat insomnia, but it effectively prevents the hormonal changes that cause morning sickness.

As always, speak to your doctor before changing your routines or taking a new medicine. If you get the thumbs-up, try one of these cures before skipping straight to the Zofran!
