More parents than ever are gravitating towards unusual and sometimes wholly original names for their little ones – and some of these novel names have gone viral.

A recent article published by The Sun revealed the most popular “made-up” baby names at the moment. The publication cited a new survey on 1,772 parents to get their opinions on original baby names. Of the moms and dads questioned, only 7% said they have given their child a unique name. However, over 65% of the respondents said they wouldn’t rule out an original name for future offspring. Even more telling, 94% of the parents agreed that they believe unique names are increasing in popularity. Some of them mentioned names like Faeline, Evabeth, Brigham, and Tovin.

The survey went on to reveal that many parents prefer the idea of giving their child an original name, so they have a more distinct identity in both reality and online. 72% of the respondents agreed that they believe an original name will better help their child stand out. Moreover, 50% of the parents said they would consider a made-up name so their child is more visible on social media. Some respondents – over 30% to be exact – also felt that original names help make their child feel special. But, on the other hand, 16% said that original names are only a way for parents to show off.

According to the study’s results, many parents who make up an unheard-of name for their kids prefer something gender neutral. Some parents also create an original name from two names they can’t choose between. 9% of respondents said they combined names in order to pay homage to a loved one. However, even though most respondents agreed original baby names seem to be increasing in popularity, most didn’t see this as a positive thing. The Sun reveals that only 8% of those surveyed believe there are no drawbacks to made-up baby names. Many of the parents, however, expressed various concerns over original names. Some were concerned  how difficult such names may be to spell or pronounce, while others worried the names might be seen as “silly.” Only 13% of respondents were concerned the name would become overused. So, maybe these original baby names won’t be all the rage this year after all.
