The New Hanover County Schools will release an app that will let parents track their kids’ bus rides to and from school. With the new technology, the school system hopes to put many parents’ anxieties to rest regarding their child’s daily commute. The $12,000 investment aims to help the over 11,000 students and their parents have a more pleasant experience with the daily bus rides.

Last year, the school district’s buses travelled a total of 2.2 million miles. 145 buses shuttled thousands of students to and from school five days a week. Despite this system that has been in place for years, many parents and children have been experiencing the same issues: not knowing bus arrival time, difficulty communicating with drivers, and unawareness of delays or breakdowns. The new all aims to solve all of these issues and provide much more.

Edulog will allow parents to track the bus that their kids are on. Using GPS technology, the specific bus’s whereabouts can be known. It will send parents notifications regarding the bus’s location, if there are any issues, and its distance from a certain stop. Edulog is set to be launched by the end of September.

Not only will parents be able to have some peace of mind through the app, but they can also prepare their kids for school appropriately. It can be difficult to time the morning routine if bus arrival times are unpredictable. Morning alarms can be set later if parents know the bus won’t arrive unexpectedly early, and kids can get more shut-eye or time to get ready for school. After school activities can also be appropriately scheduled so that kids don’t have to panic about catching the last bus home. If the parent gets notified that the bus already left, then they can arrange for other ways to get their kid home.

Edulog can also help with the data gathering the school district needs. The system can only be improved if they have gathered enough data, so an app that tracks each bus’s mileage and performance is a good step towards that direction. Hopefully, the app will run smoothly, and information can be distributed accurately to all users.
