For all of the hectic chaos, the frustrations, the worries, not to mention the sacrifices we've been forced to make due to all that 2020 has put us through, this much is clear: 2021 is almost here and we've all earned the right have some fun to bring in this much-needed new start. Yes, we know that just because the dawn of the new year is upon us doesn't automatically mean that this awful virus will disappear but 2020 had a lot of unpleasantness on top of COVID-19 so let's say goodbye to possibly what will go down in history (fingers crossed) as the craziest and most backward year ever with a PARTY as a way to offset all of the tragedy and negativity that this year has brought in.

Just because you've got little ones at home doesn't mean that you need to hang up your dancing shoes and your fav LBD. We've got ten celebratory ways for you to ring in the new year with the whole fam. Here's to 2021! Cheers to this brand new year!

10 Host A Slumber Party In Your Family Room

We can't think of a cozier way to ring in the New Year than to put on your comfiest set of pyjamas and cuddle up with the kids in a family-style sleepover in the family room or den. Think back to your own childhood slumber parties for ideas... you can turn pretty much any idea into a family-friendly version.

Remember MASH? Instead of playing for "Mansion, Apartment, Shack/Street/Shed/Sewers/Swamp, and House," you can "predict" each other's breakfasts. Melon, almond granola cereal, smoothie, and hash browns? You can turn it into predicting future careers, future favorite celebrity, pretty much anything that doesn't have to do with romance. You can also make paper fortune tellers, play a family-friendly game of the classic "Would You Rather?", play charades, serve up yummy snacks, and watch a fun movie. All while in your jammies and camped out in the family room, of course.

9 Toast To 2021 With A "Toast Float Party"

Toasting isn't just for adults! Why not set up a float bar and have a float party? Get creative with ice cream bars, flavored ice cream rather than plain vanilla (our go-to favorite is Ben & Jerry's "Milk" and Cookies Non-Dairy), and other soda flavors such as ginger ale or orange soda. You can get fancy with frozen or refrigerated glasses or mason jars or keep it sweet and simple with plastic cups.

After everyone has made their own creation at the float bar, have all of the kids (parents, too!) take turns toasting each family member with a sincere compliment. Or each family member can say what they wish for the New Year. After each "toaster" is done speaking, everyone can say, "Cheers!" in unison before taking a sip of their float. If this goes well for your family, why not make it a tradition?

8 Make A 2020 Time Capsule & Host A "Reverse Hide-And-Seek" Party

2020 was quite the year! Since this one is going down in history, have your kiddos create a time capsule to preserve your own piece of history. You don't need anything fancy but it will be a fun craft that the kids can do with your help in the afternoon to keep them busy. Your capsule can be as simple as a shoebox, a small Rubbermaid tub, or just an empty canister that you fish out of your recycle bin. The kids can decorate the outside using construction paper and markers. You can also use this cute idea to make a cardboard book to store your 2020 memories.

You'll definitely want to add a recent newspaper or piece of junk mail that you've received mentioning COVID, a disposable mask, and... an empty toilet paper roll? Make it fun coming up with ideas of what should be included. Then, after it's complete, have a family vote on when the 2020 time capsule should be opened. In 2025? 2030? 2035?

After that's done, it's time to celebrate with a game of "Reverse Hide-And-Seek." This game is so much fun and it's played exactly like it sounds. You might also know this game as "Snug Bug." To play, one person is chosen as the hider. Everyone closes their eyes to give the hider time to hide. When time's up, everyone seeks out the hider. The twist is that when a seeker finds the hider, they hide with them! The last seeker to find the hider loses and becomes the next hider.

7 Photo Booth Right In Your Home!

Everyone loves photo booths at weddings and big events. But you can bring in the New Year with a photo booth party for your family right at home. All you'll need is a black or dark-colored sheet or blank wall in your home, your camera phone (with a timer function), and dress-up items that you have at home. You don't need to have a dress-up trunk, just hats, sunglasses, and scarves will do the trick. You can also buy fun items at your local dollar tree or make your own props from construction paper and stick them to straws with tape or glue.

Make sure that your phone is on selfie mode and the 10-second timer is ready to go and you're all set! Not only will you have a ton of fun but you'll have some instant (hilarious and adorable) souvenirs from your family party.

6 Bring On The Noise

If there's one thing that New Year's Eve parties are known for, it's noise. So bring on the noise! Gather up all the alarm clocks in your house and set them for midnight (or whatever time your mock midnight will be). Make sure that they are all plugged in or placed in the room where your family party will be. Don't forget to set your phone's alarm as well. Pass out pots and pans if you dare, and to top it off, you can make holiday poppers with your kids during the day using paper towel rolls, homemade confetti, wrapping paper, and ribbon or string. If you like, you can also find a YouTube video of party noise or audience clapping sounds effects. Queue this video up and have it ready to play when the clock strikes 12.

5 Have A White Elephant Gift Exchange Party

Have each family member find a "White Elephant" gift among their possessions to add to the game or you can buy items for each of your family members (including yourself). They can be silly items from the dollar store or something as simple as gourmet lollipops or small bags of chips, in different flavors of course. Each family member gets assigned a number randomly or by playing Rock-Paper-Scissors and then gets to choose the gift to open. The next family member can then steal the previously opened gift or choose a new gift. This continues until every present has been opened. Let the gift-stealing and family fun begin! You can find the full rules for this classic holiday game here.

4 Dance-Off Contest

Dance off, family-style! Search YouTube for dance crazes and master the basic steps. If you have older kids, have them each pick a favorite TikTok dance craze. Dances that call for specific but repetitive steps are best such as The Dougie or The Macarena. Or, if you wish, go classic with The Foxtrot or dip back into history with The Hand Jive. There are YouTube tutorials for each of every dance out there. Invite each family member to dress up or come in the pj's and ready to party! Assign a judge (or pick a judge based on a family vote) or if you have a bigger family, pick a panel of judges. If you have leftover Halloween candy, create some candy prizes or you can have intangible presents such as winner gets to stay up an extra hour on New Year's Day or winner gets to choose breakfast tomorrow. Now that all that's been settled, it's time to DANCE to bring on 2021!

3 Pillow Fight Party Fun

Have you ever had a pillow fight? If not, why not create a New Year's Eve Pillow Fight Party? You and the kids can spend the later part of the day building a fort in the family room. Near midnight or mock midnight, ran each family member with a soft, fluffy pillow (no zippers for safety) and prepare for battle when the clock strikes! Don't forget to put on some fun music - the "Mission Impossible" theme song works or the "Star Wars" theme song if your family are "Star Wars" fans.

2 Masquerade Ball

Class up your family's New Year's Eve plans with a masquerade ball! During the day, help your kids create handmade masquerade masks using paper plates, popsicle sticks, and construction paper. When it's time to debut the creations, make a big deal out of it. Have each child (parents too!) dress up and present their masks fashion show-style to awaiting family members sitting in "the audience." Be sure to shower each family member with tons of applause! After each mask has been debuted, you can offer ginger ale and crackers with fancy music playing until it's time to ring in the New Year!

1 Glow-In-The-Dark Party

You will have to go shopping for this one unless you happen to have glow-in-the-dark paraphernalia still laying around from Halloween. This idea is pretty simple but can be tons of fun. Have each family member wear the brightest clothing that they can find. Bonus for neon colors! Then adorn each outfit with glow-in-the-dark sticks, necklaces, and bracelets. Be sure to turn out the lights when it gets close to midnight so you can all take in the glowing glory as you party to fun music!

No matter how you and your family choose to ring in 2021, we hope you have a very safe and fun New Year's Eve with your family. Happy 2021!
