New York City is the city that never sleeps and, in January, we may learn how true that statement really is when a baby boom is predicted for the metropolis. Pandemic pregnancies, as they are called, are on the rise with more women are seeking fertility treatments.

"It’s a boom time here," said New York University Langone Health fertility specialist Dr. David Keefe told the New York Post. "I think for many people this pandemic has sort of forced a reconciliation of what really matters."

New York's biggest hospital network, Northwell Health, is expecting a leap in birth rates starting in January by 2 or 3%. While that might seem like a small jump, it's actually not. Typically, the network sees about 30,000 births in a year, but there are 750 more expected in 2021. The Post reports that 40 obstetrical practices, located in New York City, Westchester and Long Island, started reporting an increase in patients around May. Fertility specialists also have said that they are treating more women.

2019 saw the lowest birth levels in 30 years across the United States, after a five year decline, the number of births in 2019 dropped 1% from 2018 to about 3.7 million. Doctors say that this new expectation of a jump, even a tiny bit, is a major positive after years of dipping.

This report is good news for New York and, perhaps the United States. The Washington Post had stated that it was still too early to say for sure, but trends suggested spikes in some locations across the globe but also declines in others. The thought was that birthrates that had been dropping in higher-income countries would continue to fall while  poorer and middle-income nations would rise. The U.N. Population Fund (UNFPA) believed  that the pandemic would limit access to contraception programs in those less financially secure nations and potentially lead to millions of unplanned pregnancies.

The irony of this report is that, depending on what you read up until now, the predictions have been all over the place. In May of this year, Insider reported that "The coronavirus 'baby boom' is only for the rich and famous. Most people are too terrified to think about having kids right now." It flies in the face of the Washington Post report which flies in the face of this new New York Post report. For those keeping track and trying to prepare for a future boom, the best sources are the newest sources. At this point, the New York January prediction is believed to be the most believable due to the timing and the first-hand reports from doctors.

Still, January is a month away and if COVID has taught us anything, it's that no one can predict what will happen next month. Once the new babies start rolling in, we'll have our answer. The Corona Generation might be right around the corner.
