It looks like Nicki Minaj will be taking a step back from music as she’s getting ready to start on a new, big project: parenthood.
The rapper surprised fans after announcing online that she plans to retire soon in order to focus her energy on starting a family. On September 5th, she shared the shocking news via Twitter. “I’ve decided to retire & have my family,” she wrote. “I know you guys are happy now. To my fans, keep reppin me, do it til da death of me […] in the box- cuz ain’t nobody checkin me. Love you for LIFE,” Nicki continued. Many fans took the tweet to mean that she is planning on starting a family with her boyfriend, Kenneth Petty.
For months, baby and marriage speculation has surrounded the high-profile couple. They revealed in August they’d even picked up a marriage license to legally seal the deal. “We filed for the marriage license and we still had to pick it up and I was travelling. By the time I came back, we had to renew it again,” Nicki said at the time, Cosmopolitan reports. “From that time, you have 90 days to get married. That was about a week ago, so now I have about 80 days.”
Even more, this past July, many fans were convinced the singer was, in fact, pregnant when she dropped a song with eerily suggestive lyrics. One of the songs from her album The Big Day seemed to confirm the star was marrying her beau as well as having a child with him. “He the Clyde to my Bonnie, ’bout to walk down the aisle and be a mommy,” Nicki raps in the song. “Ooh, I remember when I cried like, ‘Why me?’ / Now I wouldn’t exchange my life for Armani.”
Up until now, Nicki has never publicly commented on the baby rumours. But given her recent tweet and the fact that she and Kenneth have already gotten a marriage license, it seems like babies are definitely on her brain. Unfortunately, however, Nicki’s romance has not been without controversy, so many fans are divided over whether baby news would be a good thing.
TMZ reports that Kenneth is actually a registered sex offender in the state of New York. He previously spent four years in prison for first-degree sexual assault, and later went back to jail following a first-degree manslaughter conviction. Nicki has, however, defended her man to the media. She has specifically said the sexual assault case was a misunderstanding- according to her, Kenneth was 16 while his girlfriend was 15, which automatically led to statutory rape charges.
