No Piercings Or Tattoos Allowed For Pregnant And Nursing Women

Tattoos and piercings used to be something of an anomaly many years ago. You'd be hard-pressed to find women with lots of tattoos or unusual piercings- and if you did, they usually belonged to certain social groups in society. But these days, more and more women have a couple of piercings or tattoos for one reason or another. They like the way they look, there's important meaning behind the tattoo, or they want a tattoo or piercing just because they can get one.

While there's nothing wrong with getting a new tattoo or piercing most of the time, there are some exceptions. One such time you can't get a tattoo and/or piercing is if you're pregnant or nursing. As a general rule, a reputable tattoo or piercing shop will ask if you're pregnant or breastfeeding if you were to inquire about one of the two. If your answer is yes, then the tattoo artist or piercer will refuse to do it.

The biggest reason for this is because there's always risk involved with getting a tattoo or piercing. There's an increased case in Hepatitis and similar diseases, and there are also the many scenarios that come along if a mistake happens. Never mind a permanent mistake you can clearly see- you could hurt yourself another way. So if you try to get a tattoo or piercing when you're pregnant or breastfeeding, you're only adding more risks.

When it comes to getting a professional opinion, no one seems to be too concerned about the matter. It turns out that neither the American Academy of Pediatrics nor the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology has an official stance on getting pierced while breastfeeding. While this may tempt you to go through with said piercing (or even a tattoo) while nursing, that doesn't mean you should.

Let's face it- the body does strange stuff in during both scenarios. The best way to minimize any and all risks that come with getting a tattoo or piercing is to wait until you're not pregnant or nursing anymore. Alternately, you can get said tattoo or piercing long before you get pregnant- think several months beforehand. You may have one life, but there's no need to risk yourself or your baby's life for something so frivolous.
