Something about celebrity mothers is just so fascinating– Kim Kardashian. Beyonce. Kylie Jenner. Victoria Beckham. The paparazzi portrays these women leading what seem to be ritzy, glamorous lives. If they aren't dining in ocean-facing restaurants, they're flying by private jet. Amazingly though, these multi-millionaires are mothers (and some of them are incredibly down-to-earth).
Celeb mommies seem to come as a #Diva or the exact opposite. Hilary Duff is the new 2018 mommy who's been there, worn the t-shirt, and she isn't afraid to talk about it. In October 2018, Hilary gave birth to her second child. Her baby girl, Banks Violet joins her son, Luca.
Hilary started out as a Disney darling. Fans remember her in the Lizzie McGuire series. At 31 years old, Hilary is now owning her Hollywood career on the hit series, Younger. Little baby Banks is still a newborn. Her mother? Hilary is anything but a "newb" at motherhood. We're looking at a mother who has proudly called stretch marks "warrior wounds." Hilary also opted out of any pain medications during her second labor.
Hilary's motherhood pics have a certain something that fans just can't put their finger on. Perhaps, it's the raw nature of her #NoMakeUp looks. Or the honesty of her pregnancy selfies. Either way, it's time to take a look at them. Here are 20 times new mom, Hilary Duff outshone other Hollywood mommies.
20 "NO SLEEP" THE FIRST WEEK: "I CAN DO THIS"
The first few weeks of motherhood can be the most challenging. Your baby is tiny and new to the world, and it's your job to handle absolutely everything. Unfortunately, the human body will show signs of tiredness when the sleepless nights rack up.
"The first week I was like: I'm doing this. I'm good." Despite no sleep, Hilary said: "I don't know where you get that energy from."
That "energy" is indeed mysterious. Think about it. You're up multiple times in the nights for feeds. You're tired, a little bit disoriented, and then out of nowhere, this energy just comes out. Hilary has called the early weeks "a fine balance."
19 "YOU DON'T HAVE ANSWERS, NO MATTER HOW MANY BOOKS YOU'VE READ"
Little ones just aren't predictable. The only thing that you can solidly predict? Well, that they'll be unpredictable. Whether it's waking up at 3 a.m. for no visible reason or dropping stuff on the floor, kids come with their own agenda. "You don't have all the answers, no matter how many books you've read," Hilary said in 2013.
"You're dealing with a hormonal rollercoaster," Hilary added. "It's a lot of different things that you don't always understand. So having a support system around me was key in the first year." Luca was past his first year here, but as you can see, #Unpredictable. Hilary aced it.
18 "THERE'S SO MUCH JUDGMENT IN THE WORLD"
True words, indeed. The pressure to be "the best" is already one that girls and women face before motherhood. Being a mom cranks that up 1000 times. Being a celebrity mom? The entire world is watching. "I just think that there's so much judgment in the world," Hilary said. "Whether it's coming from women in general or from men onto women."
"When it comes to being a mom, I wish everyone could band together and realize that everyone has different beliefs, different styles, and different things that work for them and their family." Hilary has never succumbed to Hollywood pressure.
17 "LADIES, LET'S BE PROUD OF WHAT WE'VE GOT"
Pregnancy is arguably the most positive moment in a woman's life. And yet, society judges. People point and stare. The minute the baby is born, new moms are swamped by "post-baby body" guidelines. Hilary has always been proud of her pregnancy figure.
"My body has given me the greatest gift of my life," Hilary said. "Stop wasting precious time wishing we were different."
When her son, Luca was five, Hilary said: "I'm turning 30 in September and my body is healthy and gets me where I need to go." Hilary added that precious time shouldn't be wasted on wishing we were "better and unflawed."
16 ALL THE TIMES SHE EMBRACED THOSE PRECIOUS MOMENTS
It's the most powerful love in the world, right? The bond between a mother and her child is something that books and magazines try and put into words. In reality, though, it's like there aren't any words that do it justice.
When Luca was young, Hilary was criticized by the media for a Disneyland pic of her giving Luca a peck on the lips. A social media storm followed, and Hilary found herself feeling judged. Speaking to those who had called it "inappropriate," Hilary stood firm in the belief that the expression of love should come with freedom. "Go ahead and click unfollow with your warped minds and judgment," she said.
15 "ASKING FOR HELP ISN'T A SIGN OF WEAKNESS"
You only need to be a mother for five minutes to know how this feels. While your baby is the center of your life, it is still your life. A mom is allowed date nights. She's also allowed a long, hot bath. The issue of asking (or paying) for help is one that often leaves mothers feeling uneasy.
"I think asking for help on a tired day isn't a sign of weakness," Hilary has said. "A lot of changes have come into your life quickly and it's important to take time for yourself! Whether that be a workout, a bath, shopping with friends, or even reading outside for half an hour, all moms should take that time."
14 "IT MADE ME SO HUMAN AGAIN"
A Hollywood career can take its toll on a woman. When you're a mother, the pressure to continue your high-profile appearances and glam looks can be something that works (Kylie Jenner is doing it), or it can be something that you dread.
For Hilary, being a mom is something that has taken "so much pressure off the what ifs." Hilary spoke to ET Canada, saying: "Like, what if? Ok. I'm still going to be Luca's mom and I still have an important role in life. And I think taking that break made me so human again." Luca is now joined by his beautiful sister, Banks Violet.
13 "THAT'S NOT A DEBUT! THAT'S AN ERRAND!"
We've seen it a thousand times. Kourtney Kardashian "makes debut" with her baby. In 2018, Stormi Webster made headlines for making her KUWTK "debut." While a new baby is an arrival, going out with your baby is more likely to be a diaper run than a runway show.
"The tabloids were like: "Hilary debuts post-baby bod! And I was like: That's not a debut" That's an errand!"
"After I had Luca, I went out to, like, the breast pump store," Hilary said. "I just had a comfortable outfit on." Hilary has refused to crumble under the Hollywood baby pressure. It's still real life for her.
12 PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT
Hilary Duff is a celebrity with an awesome sense of humor. "Had the baby" was the caption to this pic of Hilary holding a teddy bear. While Hilary is no longer a first-time mom, she hasn't forgotten how it feels to be expecting (and still wonder what to expect).
Hilary has been very open about her mommy journey so far. When Luca was still a newborn, Hilary admitted to "fatigue" after sleepless nights. Then again, Hilary doesn't hold back when it comes to sharing what worked for her. "So many people were like: Take naps when your baby naps," she said. "It really helped a lot," she concluded.
11 STYLISH WHEN SHE'S PREGNANT
Pregnancy style takes on a whole new meaning when you're a celebrity. Every paparazzo, magazine, fashion pundit, and social media account is out to comment on your pregnancy style– it's like being a runway model (when you absolutely don't feel like one). Kim Kardashian had entire Vogue articles written on her pregnancy style.
Hilary's pregnancy style has always put her comfort first. Sure, Hilary has added a #Glam for media appearances, but with Hilary, it was never about the designer brands. Hilary has described her motherhood style as "comfortable." She looked stylish throughout both her pregnancies, but her wardrobes never felt forced.
10 STYLISH WHEN SHE'S NOT
There's something super stylish about Hilary Duff– and not in your standard Kardashian way. Hilary is less about flaunting that Louis Vuitton monogram (and more about channeling understated elegance). Speaking about her Younger role, where she plays the super-stylish Kelsy, Hilary said: "Kelsy is very girly. I feel like I would wear everything she wears– maybe just not how she wears it."
Hilary has her designer items, but you'll rarely see this star wearing full-on Versace. Hilary is more the kind of mom who enjoys pairing tapered pants or jeans with a brightly colored shirt. Hilary has never apologized for her style. In fact, she celebrates it.
9 A MOTHER WHO KNOWS WHAT SHE'S DOING
Now there's the confidence we all love to see. At the same time, nothing about this picture of Hilary is "showing off." The issue of parading kids around the media has become controversial in the celebrity world. Reality shows might give mommies an insight into parenting, but not everyone agrees that having the baby on show is the right move.
"Honestly, trying to put into perspective other peoples' realities," Hilary told In Style. Hilary doesn't have the world's most unconventional parenting methods, but she chooses her methods out of genuine belief in what is best for herself and her kids.
8 LEGOLAND OVER GLAM SQUADS
The early months and years of motherhood are more about sterilizing bottles and nap times than outings. It's when they're toddlers and beyond though, that you really get to explore the fun. Hilary was at Legoland, here.
The Kardashian-Jenner glam squad costs a staggering $11,500 a day. Kim and Kylie are wonderful mothers, but you can't deny there's a slight #Diva there.
There are different kinds of celeb moms. With $3000-a-day stylists and a glam squad that adds up to $11,500 a day, the Kardashians might do Disneyland, but there's a lot going on behind the scenes. Hilary? She seems to prefer enjoying the scenery.
7 FOCUSING ON HER FAMILY, NOT THE CAMERA LENS
Celebrity baby pics are adorable. They were adorable when Angelina Jolie showed the world her newborn twins, and they're just as adorable from the social media queen, Kylie Jenner. At the same time, there's no denying that some celeb moms seem to eye up the camera lens more than they do their own kids.
While some new celeb moms are talking mascaras and contour sticks, the buzz around Hilary is way more motherhood-centric. Baby Banks already has fans chasing down Hilary's nursing bra. Moms are now buying affordable alternatives, like the Momanda Women's Lace Trim Nursing Bra ($17) and the Gratlin ($18).
6 HER CAREER IS GOING FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH
Juggling motherhood with a career is a tough challenge for any mother. You don't need to be a celebrity to know that a demanding little one makes going into work a million times harder, but it is possible. For some moms, it's an office job. For others, it's working from home.
Hilary has a music career and her sensational acting roles. In 2015, Hilary joined the cast of Younger (from Sex and The City's producer). Hilary was already a mother here, but she never let her career slip. At the same time, Hilary remains one of the most dedicated moms we've seen.
5 SHE OPTED FOR A HOME BIRTH WITHOUT PAIN MEDICATION
How a mother chooses to give birth is 100% her choice. Whether it's a C-section, an epidural, a water birth, or the more traditional hospital setting, the delivery process should be one that is safe (and one that the mother is comfortable with).
For her second birth, Hilary opted for a home delivery. "Absolute natural childbirth" wasn't something that Hilary had previously considered.
Speaking on a guest podcast, Hilary said that Luca's labor was at home, but that she hadn't considered a medication-free birth. "I'm older now," Hilary said. Banks Violet was born at home in LA with no pain aids.
4 SHE ADMITTED LUCA WAS "ON THE FENCE" ABOUT BECOMING A BIG BROTHER
Bringing the first baby into the world isn't exactly straight-forward, but from the baby's point of view, there isn't much competition. Mommy's attention is 100% on them, and that can be something that they get used to. Bringing a second baby into the world can be challenging for a child– they may not understand how things will change.
"Luca took a while to open up to the idea of being a big brother," Hilary admitted. "Now that little Banks is here, I'm sure he's making one heck of a big brother." Hilary did, however, admit that Luca was "on the fence" about having to share the attention.
3 "WE KEEP ON TRUCKING" ABOUT CO-PARENTING
It's an unfortunate, but real truth that not all relationships last. Hilary has just welcomed baby Banks into the world with her boyfriend, Matthew Koma. Hilary's first child, Luca is shared with her ex-husband, Mike Comrie. Together, they work hard to co-parent.
"We have such a great kid, and we're both so obsessed with him," Hilary revealed in 2016 on The Ellen Show. "We are good friends and we laugh a lot and we have great communication." The media has a prying eye on celebs who co-parent– Kourtney Kardashian is living proof. Hilary takes it in her stride and does her best. "We keep on trucking," she said.
2 SHE REFUSES TO LOOK BACK
We all have regrets. Whether it's career decisions, relationship choices, or fashion regrets, looking back on the past can dampen our confidence. For Hilary, every moment of her motherhood journey is filled with gratitude.
Hilary describes her physique as "the greatest gift of my life." She has always been proud of what the female body can do, and she applauds her achievements.
When Hilary took her time to return to her pre-baby shape, social media came out and criticized her. "You guys (you know who you are!) already know how to ruin a good time, and now you are body [criticizers] as well!" she wrote.
1 "THIS IS US"
And that's as simple as it gets with Hilary. No glam squad, no dressing room filled with stylists and 20,000 makeup brushes. A raw, passionate adoration for her kids is what Hilary shows us (although having a glam squad doesn't mean that you love your kids any less).
"Be proud of yourself" are Hilary's words on motherhood. "This is us" was the caption to an Instagram pic of Hilary with Luca (although now that Banks has joined them, prepare for more pics of Luca and the new baby).
