An off-duty police officer saved a little toddler while at a restaurant after giving her the Heimlich.

Earol Mora was off-duty while enjoying a nice time at the Shake Shack in Skokie, Illinois. He was minding his own business when he overheard a family panicking and in complete distress. He looked over to see what all of the commotion was about and he saw a little child who was pale and was gasping for air. He immediately knew that the child was choking and the family would need assistance. He jumped towards them to help.

Mora grabbed the baby from the mother's arms and told them he was a police officer. He began performing the Heimlich on the child to try to get the item out from her throat. Mora said that the family was frantic and pleading that he save their child. He kept on praying that the baby would not die in his arms. Thankfully he was able to dislodge the piece of food from her throat and the baby immediately started breathing normally.  The mother was so grateful for the officers quick thinking and his ability to save the child.

This is a very good example of why it is so important for parents to always know what to do in case of an emergency with children. Things happen, kids choke, that is not the parent's fault. However, a parent should know how to do the Heimlich maneuver on the sweet baby to be able to save their lives. Every parent should know the Heimlich and CPR in case of an emergency. If the officer wasn't at this same location as the family the story could have easily had a different outcome.

The Heimlich and CPR are very simple maneuvers if you know them. The family should have been able to perform the maneuver on the child without having to wait for the officer. Hopefully, the family can take some classes so they are more prepared next time. All parents with young children should be educated in basic first aid to help protect their babies when they are all alone and don't have immediate access to an emergency responder.
