Portland Moms Turn To Cannabis To Help With Pregnancy & Childbirth Despite Doctor Concerns

More and more moms are turning to cannabis as an alternative way to deal with pregnancy discomfort and labor pains. Some of these women are from Portland, Oregon, like Megon Dee-Cave. She not only owns a CBD company but used CBD while in labor with her child.

Dee-Cave chose to use natural CBD oil over pharmaceutical medicines or an epidural for pain relief. CBD functions differently than THC. While THC is the main ingredient in marijuana that causes a psychoactive effect, CBD is non-psychoactive. Meaning it doesn't cause a mind-altering state and it is legal.

Still, marijuana for recreational use remains illegal at a federal level. Medical marijuana has long been used to treat many conditions such as chronic pain, nausea, insomnia, PTSD, depression, anxiety, and seizures.

As for Dee-Cave, she administered herself 35 milligrams and then a higher dose as the labor pains intensified. She gave birth at a center with midwives who legally aren't allowed to give her the CBD. She gave herself a tincture with is highly concentrated CBD that has been heating for a long time over the stove with high proof alcohol.

The alcohol cooks burn off leaving a potent CBD liquid that is taken in small doses. A dropper should be used to add a few drops into your beverage of choice.

There have been no significant studies on the effects of CBD or THC on unborn fetuses. So really, no one knows how safe or unsafe it is for use during pregnancy. The official recommendation from doctors is to steer clear of marijuana, THC, and CBD. There are certain occasions where doctors may recommend it. This will happen rarely in cases of extreme nausea resulting in weight loss and/or risk of malnutrition.

Studies need to be done but it's hard to potentially risk an unborn child to confirm or deny any issues. The use of THC or CBD during pregnancy will remain a personal choice.
